SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – The St. John's softball team (32-12-1, 12-3 BIG EAST) dropped both games of a doubleheader at Seton Hall on Sunday afternoon.
The Red Storm fell in the opening game, 3-1, before dropping the latter contest, 10-0. On Friday, the Johnnies took the series opener with a 5-4 victory over the Pirates.
Madison Konopka paced the offense with a base hit in both contests along with an RBI in the first game. The freshman is batting .400 in conference play and has totaled 13 RBIs this season.
Anese Thompson and Cassidy Stouffer also notched a pair of singles between the two contests, while Melanie Santos tallied her seventh double of the season in the opening game.
Game two starter Ana Serafinko reached the 400 career strikeout mark by notching three punchouts in 1.2 innings of work. The left-hander has tallied 210 strikeouts this season after finishing last year with 174.
Game 1
In the opening game, Seton Hall threatened in the bottom of the first with a Katey Brennan lead-off double and a Hannah Alexander walk, putting two runners on. However, St. John's starter Loreley Francia rallied back with a punchout to record the third out and keep the game scoreless after an inning of play.
Francia and Pirates' starter Kelsey Carr then engaged in a pitcher's duel, keeping the scoreboard blank through four innings of action.
Seton Hall faced another scoring opportunity in the bottom of the fifth, starting the frame with a pair of base hits. Francia showed poise yet again, striking out the next three batters and raising her total to six punchouts in the contest.
The Red Storm offense put its first runner in scoring position in the top of the sixth as Jess Bianco and London Jarrard recorded back-to-back one-out singles. Thompson then loaded the bases on a walk with two outs, but Carr was able to tally the third out and keep the score 0-0.
Andrea Perez gave Seton Hall the lead in the bottom of the sixth, hitting a three-run home run to center field, 3-0.
In the top of the seventh, St. John's attempted to rally with Santos driving a one-out double into the left-center gap ahead of Konopka lacing an RBI single into center, 3-1. However, Carr recorded the final out to give the Pirates a 3-1 victory.
Game 2
Seton Hall struck early in game two of the day, plating four runs capped by an Olivia Gilbert three-run home run in the bottom of the first inning to take a 4-0 lead.
The Pirates continued to attack, scoring six more runs in the second and third innings to take a 10-run advantage.
St. John's tallied its first hits of the latter contest in the top of the fourth with Thompson and Stouffer recording a pair of base hits with two outs. However, Seton Hall's starter Kyra Kreuscher left the frame unscathed by tallying the third out, 10-0.
In the top of the fifth, Natalie Casto and Konopka attempted to spark a late rally with a pair of base hits, but Kreuscher tallied the final out to enforce the run-ahead rule and give Seton Hall the 10-0 win.
The Red Storm will be back in action when it heads to Omaha, Neb., to take on Creighton for a three-game series beginning on Thursday.
