No. 3 St. John’s Set to Face No. 6 Butler on Friday in BIG EAST Quarterfinals

The Red Storm has never faced the Bulldogs in the conference tournament
QUEENS, N.Y. – The third-seeded St. John's women's tennis team will face No. 6 Butler in the BIG EAST Tournament quarterfinals on Friday. First serve from the Cayce Tennis Center in Cayce, S.C.
Friday will be the first conference tournament matchup between the two foes and the first time the schools have squared off since the Red Storm took down the Bulldogs, 5-2, on March 21, 2019.
The Johnnies finished the regular season 13-6 and 5-1 in BIG EAST play, most recently falling to UConn, 4-3, for its only in-conference blemish of 2025.
Sandra Dzhambazov, who went 12-1 in singles action in her first season in Queens, has led St. John's. Alicia Gomez has also been strong this season, earning a 12-4 solo record and a 12-5 doubles mark alongside Noemi Babikova, Victoria Papadopoulou and Dzhambazov.
Giulia Bizzari and Charlotta Buss also amassed six wins as a pair in doubles action.
Butler swept past No. 11 Providence, 4-0, on Thursday in the tournament's opening round to advance to Friday's quarterfinals against the Red Storm. The Bulldogs went 8-12 in the regular season, winning four of their seven BIG EAST matches.
Chase Metcalf led the Bulldogs with 12 solo triumphs this season, while Nora Balthazor had nine. In doubles action, Matcalf and Brooke Arington won 11 contests together, all at the top singles position.
The winner of Friday's quarterfinals will advance to Saturday's semifinal, set to begin at 9 a.m. at the Cayce Tennis Center.
