QUEENS, N.Y.– The St. John's women's basketball program announced the signing of Miami transfer Daniela Abies on Monday.
A dynamic post player, Abies appeared in eight games with the Hurricanes missing the remainder of the season due to injury and spent her first two collegiate seasons at Wichita State, where she was an All-American Athletic Conference Third Team selection in 2023-24.
"We're excited to have Daniela join our program," said Head Coach Joe Tartamella. "Daniela is a versatile and experienced post player that has played in high-leverage games. Her rebounding ability and presence in the paint will help us on both ends of the floor. We look forward to having her play a role in our success this season as a veteran player at this level."
The Malaga, Spain native played in the first eight games of the season averaging 9.6 minutes and shot 61.5 percent from the field before suffering a season-ending injury in December.
Prior to arriving in Coral Gables, Abies played two seasons at Wichita State appearing in 57 games, making 30 starts from 2022-24. The 6-foot forward tallied 8.3 points on 45.1 percent shooting and 6.8 rebounds during her tenure with the Shockers.
During her final season with the Shockers, Abies had a breakout campaign averaging a near double-double of 13.0 points and 9.7 rebounds per contest. The four-time AAC Weekly Honor roll selection recorded 11 double-doubles leading the team in rebounding 23 times. The sophomore broke the AAC Tournament single-game rebounding record pulling down 22 boards in a win over Florida Atlantic on March 9, 2024. The 22-rebound performance marked a career-high in the seventh highest single-game total during the 2023-24 campaign.
A capable scorer in the paint, Abies led the team in scoring nine times and went off for a career-best 23 points against UAB on Jan. 25, 2024. She finished the year with 21 double-figure scoring efforts for the Shockers.
During her freshman year in Kansas, Abies played in 26 games in a reserve role averaging 2.8 points and 3.3 rebounds in 10.1 minutes of action per contest.
Back home in Spain, she played for the national team making the roster for the European Championships, World Championships and won a silver medal at the U19 FIBA World Cup in 2019.
On the club level, she played for Salesianos San Bartolomé, Miramar and the best team in her home city, Unicaja Málaga.
