QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's softball team (34-14-1, 14-4 BIG EAST) fell to Hofstra, 3-1, on Wednesday afternoon at Red Storm Field.
The Johnnies notched 12 hits in the contest, with four players tallying two-hit performances: Jess Bianco, London Jarrard, Cassidy Stouffer and Madison Konopka.
Melanie Santos drove in the lone run for the Red Storm on an RBI single back up the middle in the bottom of the seventh inning. The first baseman has started every game for St. John's, totaling 17 RBIs on the year.
After starter Loreley Francia tossed a clean top of the first, the Red Storm threatened right away in the home half with Bianco and Jarrard notching a pair of bunt singles on the first two pitches of the game. However, Hofstra's starter Carley Ernst recorded the next three outs to leave the frame unscathed, 0-0.
Hofstra (16-24, 11-10 CAA) entered the run column in the top of the third, plating three runs on a Chelsea Villar two-run home run and a Dahlia Palacio RBI double, 3-0.
Francia then settled back in on the rubber in the fourth, striking out the side to raise her total to five punchouts in the contest, 3-0.
In the top of the fifth, Ana Serafinko entered in relief of Francia, sitting the Pride down 1-2-3 with a pair of strikeouts to hold Hofstra's lead to three runs.
Jarrard led off the bottom of the fifth with her second bunt single ahead of Anese Thompson, who drove a base hit into left center, putting runners on the corners with one out. Stouffer then drew a walk to load the bases, but Ernst got out of another jam by tallying the next two outs, 3-0.
The Red Storm offense notched its first run in the bottom of the seventh after Stouffer led off with a bunt single and Santos drove her home on an RBI base hit back up the middle, 3-1. However, the St. John's rally fell short as Hofstra's Anna Butler recorded the save and sealed the 3-1 victory for the Pride.
St. John's will look ahead to its final three games at Red Storm Field when it welcomes Villanova to Queens for another BIG EAST series starting on Friday at 2 p.m.
