QUEENS, N.Y. – The late Anthony Varvaro, former Major League Baseball pitcher and St. John's standout, will be honored by the Staten Island FerryHawks for First Responder's Day on Sunday, May 18 at SIUH Community Park.
In honor of Varvaro's contributions to baseball on and off the field, the FerryHawks in partnership with the Tunnel to Towers Foundation will retire the number 24, which he proudly wore during his time at West Shore Little League. The retirement ceremony is set to start at 12:45 p.m. Gates for SIUH Community Park will open at 12:15 p.m. and the first 1,000 fans in attendance will receive a commemorative number 24 t-shirt. The Port Authority Ceremonial Unit will present the nation's colors during the national anthem, paying tribute to all first responders.
Varvaro, an advocate and enthusiastic supporter of Staten Island baseball, spent his time in the Snug Harbor community with the goal of improving facilities to increase enrollment, create a positive environment for high-level competition and strengthen the community. The Staten Island native guided the area to new heights and provided over 550 boys and girls of diverse communities the opportunity to learn and play baseball and softball in one year.
Following his baseball career, the former Red Storm star pursued a career in law enforcement, joining the Port Authority Police Department in 2016. He dedicated five years of service to patrolling the World Trade Center campus, before moving over to the Police Academy to help modernize training programs.
A six-year veteran of the MLB for the Mariners, Braves and Red Sox, Varvaro compiled a career 3.23 ERA through 166 appearances, 153 of which came with Atlanta.
The Seattle Mariners selected the All-American and All-BIG EAST First Teamer out of Queens with their 12th-round pick in the 2005 MLB Amateur Draft. Varvaro went 21-12 during his tenure with the Red Storm, compiling a 3.48 ERA and a strikeout-to-walk ratio of better than 2-to-1. Opponents hit just .226 against the right-hander during his three-year career with the Johnnies.
