Chen came in 27th place marking the best NCAA Regional by a St. John’s golfer in the 21st century
AMHERST, Va. – Peicheng Chen finished out strong in the final round of his collegiate career, logging a 27th place finish at the NCAA Amherst Regional on Wednesday.
The senior shot 3-over, 213, going 70-74-69 over three rounds at Poplar Grove Golf Club to post the best finish by a St. John's golfer at an NCAA Regional this century. He surpassed Ryan McCormick by a one spot, who finished tied for 28th at the 2014 NCAA Auburn Regional.
In Wednesday's final round, Chen recorded his lowest score of tournament logging a 1-under, 69, fueled by a strong stretch on the back nine where he birdied three out of four holes to finish third amongst the 10 individual competitors.
Oklahoma, Tennessee, Vanderbilt, Wake Forest and Pepperdine were the top-five team finishers and punched their tickets to NCAA Championships. Texas State's Sakke Siltala advanced to California as the individual, shooting 5-under, 205.
After resuming on the first hole bright and early, Chen made a double bogey to start the day. The Beijing, China native bounced back quickly on the second hole. After driving the fairway, the iron approach arched its way within 10-feet of the goal. Chen cashed in on the birdie putt to gain a stroke back.
The senior logged a pair of pars on hole three and four. On the par-4 5th hole, he delivered a strike off the tee with his 3-wood onto the fairway setting up a quality approach. He sunk his second birdie putt of the morning to climb back to even for the day. Chen recorded par on three of his final holes on the front nine, carding a 1-over, 36.
On the back, he notched his third birdie of the day on the par-5 11th after a beautiful iron shot that planted onto the green. After another par, Chen birdied once again taking advantage of hitting the green in regulation on the downhill par 3.
The hot streak continued on the 14th after the three-time All-BIG EAST selection unleashed a ferocious 330-yard drive that planted on the green. He two-putted for his second consecutive birdie and third over the last four holes.
Coming down the stretch, Chen made par on the three of the final four holes to close out the round at 1-under, 69. He narrowly missed a birdie chance on the 18th green to close out his career.
Chen finishes his St. John's career as one of the most decorated players in program history. The Beijing, China native won six tournaments, including three this season, captured a BIG EAST title and became the first Johnnie to make consecutive NCAA Regional appearances since U.S. Ryder Cup Captain Keegan Bradley.
