St. John’s Prepares for NCAA Tournament First Round Matchup Against Princeton

The Red Storm is coming off its eighth BIG EAST Tournament Title
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's men's tennis team will take on Princeton in the first round of the 2025 NCAA Men's Tennis Tournament on Saturday in Charlottesville, Va. First serve in the Red Storm's round of 64 matchup against the Tigers is set for 10 a.m. at the Virginia Tennis Facility.

St. John's went 25-2 this season, culminating in its eighth BIG EAST Tournament championship, marking the winningest campaign in program history. In last week's conference tournament, the Red Storm won three matches in three days, culminating in a 4-0 sweep over No. 2 Creighton in the championship, punching its first ticket to the NCAA Tournament since 2023.
Ryota Kaneda led St. John's this season, going 18-1 in solo play and 18-1 in doubles action, including a 17-1 mark alongside Adam Groves. The Japan product was named to the All-BIG EAST Second Team for the second year in a row. Joining Kaneda on the second team, Leonardo Mileikowsky won 17th solo matches, the most recent of which clinched the BIG EAST title for the Johnnies.
In his first season in Queens, Max Amling won 15 individual matches, while two-time All-BIG EAST selection Carl Gustavsson went 14- 5. Both were tabbed to the All-BIG EAST First Team, unanimously. Gustavsson appears as an all-conference player for the fourth straight year and has been a first team selection each of the last three seasons.
The Red Storm, earning a bid to the tournament for the sixth time in program history, are coming off their third BIG EAST Championship over the past six years under Head Coach Dillon Pottish. Pottish and his assistants were selected as the conference's Coaching Staff of the Year for the third time since 2019.
This is the third time the Johnnies will be in Charlottesville for the NCAA Tournament, having previously faced Virginia in 2015 and 2019.
Princeton went 21-8 this year and 5-2 in conference play. St. John's is 3-7 all-time against the Tigers, most recently falling to their New Jersey opponents in 2022. This will be the third neutral site matchup between the two programs and the first since 2012.
The winner of Saturday's opening round matchup will advance to Sunday's round of 32 contest and await the winner of Virginia against Bucknell. Sunday's second round action is set to begin at 1 p.m. from the Virginia Tennis Complex.
