St. John’s Evens Series; Edges UConn, 4-3

The Red Storm and Huskies will now play for the BIG EAST Regular Season Title tomorrow afternoon
STORRS, Conn. – The St. John's softball team (38-15-1, 18-5 BIG EAST) evened its series with UConn, edging the Huskies with a 4-3 victory on Saturday afternoon at Burrill Family Field in Storrs, Conn.
After falling to UConn (32-16, 18-5 BIG EAST) in last night's series opener, 3-0, the Johnnies bounced back with today's win to make tomorrow's series finale a BIG EAST Regular Season Championship game.
With today's win, the Red Storm set a new program record by tallying its 18th BIG EAST win of the regular season. The squad reached a new program record for overall win total earlier this year with 38 wins and counting.
Loreley Francia was brilliant inside the circle, allowing three earned runs on four hits while punching out 11 batters in the complete game victory. The junior now holds a 1.83 ERA and has struck out 185 batters in 153 innings pitched.
Natalie Casto's RBI single in the top of the sixth proved to be the difference in the contest. The second baseman now has 18 RBIs on the season.
Elanna Lysiak drove home the first two runs of the ballgame in the top of the fourth with a two-RBI single before Cassidy Stouffer added another with an RBI base hit. Lysiak and Stouffer have 35 and 26 RBIs on the year, respectively.
Jess Bianco paced the offense with two hits in the contest and came around the score once. With the run scored in today's contest, the Cherry Hill, N.J., product has 52 tallies on the season, marking a new program record.
Francia kicked off the contest with three consecutive scoreless frames, allowing just a pair of hits while tallying five strikeouts to keep the scoreboard blank after three innings of play.
The Red Storm offense struck in the top of the fourth, loading the bases with a pair of singles by Bianco and London Jarrard, and an Anese Thompson hit by pitch. An out later, Lysiak drove a two-RBI single into center field to give the Johnnies a 2-0 lead. Stouffer tacked on another by blooping an RBI single over second base, 3-0.
Francia kept the momentum going, striking out a pair in both the fourth and fifth to raise her total to eight punchouts and hold St. John's three-run advantage into the sixth.
St. John's tacked on another in the top of the sixth as Lysiak drew a walk before Melanie Santos recorded an infield single, putting runners on the corners with two outs. Casto then delivered an RBI base hit through the right side, 4-0.
Cat Petteys cut into the Red Storm's lead in the bottom of the sixth, hitting a three-run home run to left field, 4-3. Francia finished the inning by striking out her 10th batter and generating a pop-up to maintain St. John's one-run edge.
In the bottom of the seventh, Francia closed the game down for the Red Storm, retiring the Huskies in order to secure the 4-3 St. John's victory and even the series.
