Red Storm to continue road swing to open 2025 campaign
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's women's soccer team (0-1, 0-0 BIG EAST) will return to action to continue its road swing to open the 2025 campaign when it faces Saint Joseph's (0-2, 0-0 Atlantic 10) on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
Sunday's non-conference contest will be streamed on ESPN+ with Matt Nissenfield on the call from Sweeney Field in Philadelphia. Live stats will be available on RedStormSports.com.
Both teams are seeking their first victory of the 2025 campaign. St. John's dropped its season opener to UMass, 1-0, on Aug. 14 in Amherst. The two sides were level until the 68th minute when the Minutewomen tallied the difference-maker at Rudd Field.
Kayla Bower matched her career-high with four saves for the fourth time in her career to begin her senior season. The Johnnies started five freshmen and nine different players made their collegiate debuts in the season opener last Thursday. Emily Riggins led the way with two shot attempts, while Molly McGlame, Jaylen Vallecillo and Madison Mariani tacked on one apiece.
The Johnnies have defeated the Hawks in six consecutive meetings and lead the all-time series, 6-1. Last year, the Red Storm shocked Saint Joseph's, 1-0, on Sept. 1, 2024 courtesy of a last-second game-winner from Jordyn Levy with :01 remaining at Belson Stadium. In St. John's last visit to Sweeney Field, the Red Storm routed the Hawks, 5-0, on Aug. 22, 2021 behind a hat-trick from Zsani Kajan.
Saint Joseph's enters the contest with a 0-2 record on the year after dropping games to a pair of CAA schools in Hofstra and Drexel. The Hawks fell to Hofstra in dramatic fashion in the season opener, conceding The Pride's game-winner the seven seconds remaining. On Thursday night, Saint Joseph's traveled to fellow Philadelphia school Drexel, where they fell, 2-0.
Sunday's matchup features a pair of longtime head coaches in Ian Stone (32nd year) and Jess Mannella (25th year at Saint Joseph's).
Following Sunday's match, the Red Storm will host its home opener at Cox Family Field at Belson Stadium on Aug. 31 against Youngstown State at 1 p.m.
