PHILADELPHIA – The St. John's women's soccer team (1-1, 0-0 BIG EAST) topped Saint Joseph's (0-3, 0-0 Atlantic-10) on the road on a sunny Sunday afternoon in Philadelphia, 1-0.
Madison Mariani recorded the game-winner in 66th minute for her first collegiate goal to propel the Red Storm past the Hawks at Sweeney Field. The Richmond Hill, Ontario native capitalized off a counterattack slicing through the defense with a cutback move inside the 18-yard box to setup the decisive goal.
St. John's moves to 1-1 on the year and extended its winning streak over Saint Joseph's to seven consecutive games.
Kayla Bower strung together a stellar performance between the pipes in her first career solo shutout effort racking up a career-high five saves on Sunday.
Mariani paced the squad with two strikes while Molly McGlame, Jaylen Vallecillo and Maya Terwilliger tallied one shot apiece.
In the early portion of the first half, neither side recorded a shot in the opening 20 minutes. Telma Steindórsdóttir made multiple defensive stops in her first appearance in 2025 anchoring the backline at center back.
Mariani provided the first look on goal for the Red Storm in the 28th minute. The sophomore received the incoming throw-in and made a turn under pressure by a pair of Hawks' defenders. As she got free, she unleashed a shot towards the left side of the net into the arms of Saint Joseph's goalkeeper Ali Popham.
In the final two minutes of the opening half, Saint Joseph's threatened with a free kick in the attacking third. Bower came off her line to deflect the oncoming ball away from danger. The two sides went into the halftime level, 0-0.
As the latter 45 minutes got underway, Saint Joseph's earned the first corner kick of the afternoon. The cross in drifted right onto the goal line as Bower batted it down and then made a crucial save on the doorstep denying the Hawks shot attempt amidst a scrum to keep the score level.
The Johnnies garnered their best chance to that point in the 53rd minute. Emily Riggins took her space on the counter attack before laying out wide to Molly McGlame. The senior winger delivered a centering pass inside the six-yard box that was swatted away by the goalkeeper. The rebound rolled onto the feet of Maya Terwilliger, who launched a strike over the crossbar.
As the Johnnies charged on the attack, Daniela Monzon sent a pass out wide to Mariani. The sophomore darted toward the goal, evading a Saint Joseph's defender with a separating cutback setting up the left-footed strike to soared into the right-side of the net to give the Red Storm the advantage in the 66th minute, 1-0.
Saint Joseph's sprung on the attack over the final 24 minutes in search of an equalizer but the Red Storm defense held strong. Bower made a pair of saves to reach her new personal best of five. In the 85th minute, the Hawks threatened with a centering pass before Leah Anand won a crucial challenge to clear away the danger. The Johnnies held the line defensively to secure a road victory.
The Red Storm will look to carry the momentum into its home opener on Aug. 31 when it welcomes Youngstown State for a 1 p.m. contest at Cox Family Field at Belson Stadium.
