St. John’s to Open BIG EAST Competition at UConn

Red Storm will kick-off league action on Saturday night at Morrone Stadium
QUEENS, N.Y.- The St. John's Women's Soccer team (2-3-2, 0-0-0 BIG EAST) will open BIG EAST competition on Saturday night when it takes defending conference tournament champions UConn (4-2-1, 0-0-0 BIG EAST) at 7 p.m.
Saturday night's match from Storrs will be streamed on ESPN+ with Ben Eskin and Jordan DiLuciano. Live stats will be available on RedStormSports.com.
The Johnnies are fresh off a pair of draws at home, most recently a 0-0 tie with Boston College on Sunday. St. John's held the high-powered Eagles attack that was averaging 2.4 goals per game scoreless to close non-conference play.
Kayla Bower has been stellar between the pipes for the Red Storm this season leading the BIG EAST with 4.43 saves per game. The senior captain has tallied 31 saves, two clean sheets and .816 save percentage.
Following her two-goal performance against FDU on Sept. 11, Jaylen Vallecillo earned her first BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll nod on Monday. The Queens native is tied for the lead in goals (2) with Madison Mariani. The sophomore has tallied a team-high five points and has put 11 of her 12 shots on target.
The Johnnies and Huskies will face off to start league play for the second straight year. In last year's meeting in Queens, St. John's took a 3-0 lead 33 minutes into the match before UConn roared back in the second half to battle to a 3-3 draw on Sept. 21, 2024 at Belson Stadium. The Red Storm are seeking its first victory in a BIG EAST opener since defeating the Huskies, 3-0, on Sept. 23, 2021.
UConn is currently riding a three-game winning streak which began on Sept. 4. Since then, the Huskies have outscored their opponents 6-1, in victories over Yale, Rhode Island and Maine. The Huskies are coming off their first BIG EAST Tournament title since in 20 years last
Senior forward and two-time All-American Chioma Okafor ranks fourth in the BIG EAST in game-winning goals with two. She led UConn to a 1-0 win over Stony Brook in the programs season-opener on Aug. 17 and scored the first of two goals in a shutout win over Rhode Island on Sept. 11.
Following Saturday's contest, St. John's will return to Cox Family Field at Belson Stadium on Wednesday night to square off with Providence on Sept. 24 at 7 p.m.
