St. John’s Draws Providence on Wednesday Night, 1-1

Telma Steindórsdóttir recorded the equalizer with 0.9 remaining in the first half
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's Women's Soccer team (2-4-3, 0-1-1 BIG EAST) tallied an equalizer with 0.9 remaining in the first half to tie Providence (3-2-2, 0-0-1 BIG EAST), 1-1, in the conference play home opener on Wednesday night.
Telma Steindórsdóttir recorded her first career goal on Wednesday night cashing in from the penalty spot with just 0.9 remaining in the opening half. The sophomore defender tallied the first made penalty kick for the Johnnies this season.
Kayla Bower registered another strong performance matching a career-high with six saves at Cox Family Field at Belson Stadium. The senior ties her previous personal best from earlier this season when she logged six stops at Monmouth earlier this month on Sept. 7.
Steindórsdóttir, Daniela Monzon, Emily Riggins and Molly McGlame registered shot attempts for the Red Storm.
In the opening five minutes, Monzon broke through for a one-on-one with the goalkeeper. The junior cracked one on frame but it was halted by the goalkeeper Ellie Thallman.
Bower continued her stellar play making another early diving stop in the eighth minute.
The Friars took a 1-0 advantage in the 17th minute as Thaea Mouratidis netted a long-range strike in th 17th minute.
St. John's started to shift the attacking momentum in its own favor as the first half clock ran down. In the final moments, Janelle Sylvestre played a cross into the box that deflected off the hand off a Friars' defender forcing a penalty kick. Steindórsdóttir stepped up to the penalty spot and delivered a grounded strike to the right side of the goal to level the score with just 0.9 remaining on the first half clock.
As the second half began, Bower came out of her cage and made a sliding stop batting away the close-range strike.
The Red Storm continued to garner possession in its attacking third and generated a shot from McGlameover the final 45 minutes. Defensively, Bower came up huge making four saves over the final 45 minutes to preserve a draw and give the Johnnies a point in the conference standings.
The Red Storm will be back in action on Saturday afternoon when it makes the trip to Seton Hall for a 1 p.m. kick-off at Owen T. Carroll Field in South Orange, N.J.
