St. John’s Drops Contest to Columbia, 1-0

The Lions’ Maia Beltran tallied the game-winner in the 53rd minute
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's Women's Soccer team (2-2, 0-0 BIG EAST) dropped its Thursday night contest to local foe Columbia (1-4, 0-0 Ivy League), 1-0, at Cox Family Field at Belson Stadium.
The Lions tallied the game-winner in the 53rd minute as Maia Beltran netted a strike from outside-the-box for the decisive goal. The Red Storm ramped up the attacking pressure late but were unable to find the equalizer in Queens.
Kayla Bower for the fourth consecutive game tallied four saves or more registering four in Thursday's setback. The reigning BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week has tallied 18 saves through four matches.
Three St. John's players- Molly McGlame, Janelle Sylvestre and Snæfríður Eiríksdóttir recorded shot attempts, one apiece. Columbia outshout the Johnnies, 10-3.
As the game got underway both sides felt each other out with only a single-shot record in the first 20 minutes of the match.
The Lions unleashed a strike on frame in the 32nd minute but it was caught by Bower. Columbia threatened once again 10 minutes later, Gabby Chen fired one across the bow but Bower sprawled out to keep the score level.
The two teams went to the locker room knotted at 0-0 through 45 minutes of action.
Early in the second half, Columbia got on the board as Lillie Hutchins tapped it over to Beltran, who delivered a long-range strike that skidded into the back-of-the-net.
After McGlame recorded St. John's first shot of the evening. The Johnnies began to ramp up the offensive attack in search of an equalizer. The squad's best opportunity came in the 76th minute off a free kick in the offensive half. Julia Lombardo provided the service from just beyond the midfield line. As the ball bounced around, Sylvestre got a foot on it delivering a line drive that streaked just outside of the left post. The Red Storm continued to hold possession in Columbia's defensive third but were unable to come up with the equalizer.
The Johnnies will be back in action on Sunday afternoon when it hits the road to face Monmouth at 1 p.m. from West Long Branch, N.J.
