St. John’s Set Back at Monmouth, 2-0

Kayla Bower recorded a career-best six saves on Sunday
WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – The St. John's women's soccer team (2-3, 0-0 BIG EAST) was set back by Monmouth (5-2, 0-0 CAA), 2-0, at Hesse Field on Sunday afternoon in New Jersey.
The Hawks tallied goals on the book ends of the match both by Summer Reimet, who scored in the second and 90th minute as Monmouth captured its fifth-straight win.
Kayla Bower recorded a career-best once again logging six saves during Sunday's match. The senior has reached or set a new career-high in stops in four of St. John's five matches and is averaging 4.8 saves per appearance.
Madison Mariani recorded a team-high three shots, including two on frame. The sophomore leads the Johnnies with two goals, four points and nine shots, eight of which have been on target this season. Telma Steindórsdóttir logged a career-high two shots while Hope Van Tuyle, Jaylen Vallecillo and Leana Ruiz registered one strike each.
The Red Storm held an advantage in earned corner kicks, 4-2, on Sunday in West Long Branch.
Monmouth got on the board just 1:35 into the match to capture an early 1-0 advantage at Hesse Field. Lindsey Husic swung in a cross that possessed by Summer Reimet as she blasted a strike into the bottom right corner in the second minute, 1-0.
Mariani logged an attempt on frame with a drive toward the right side that was saved by Tallulah Miller in the 22nd minute.
In the 42nd minute, the Johnnies looked for another opportunity to equalize off the set piece. Snaefridour Eva Eiriksdottir played a ball in that was headed toward the far post. Jaylen Jalecillo nearly got a foot on it in front of an open net.
Monmouth held the 1-0 lead heading into the locker room for halftime.
Early in the second half, Van Tuyle and Ruiz tested the Monmouth goalkeeper with strikes on over a two-minute span.
As the Red Storm still searched for the game-tying goal, Bower continued her impressive play between the pipes. The Lincoln Park, N.J., native made a diving stop in the 70th minute.
As the clock dwindled, the hawks held possession in their own attacking third over the last 10 minutes. Summer Reimet completed the brace and doubled the Monmouth lead, 2-0, with 0:27 remaining.
St. John's will be back at home on Thursday when it hosts FDU for a 4 p.m. start at Cox Family Field at Belson Stadium.
