WASHINGTON – The St. John's women's basketball team fell on the road to Georgetown, 59-34, at McDonough Arena on Tuesday night.
Brooke Moore paced the Johnnies with 11 points and two rebounds while Sa'Mya Wyatt delivered a strong presence on the glass, tying her career high with 13 rebounds and accounting for half of St. John's total boards in the contest.
Georgetown was led by Destiny Agubata, who finished with 15 points to go along with four assists and four rebounds.
The opening five minutes were tightly contested, highlighted by Beautiful Waheed knocking down a pair of three-pointers as Georgetown held a slim 9-8 edge. Laila Jewett sparked an 11-0 Hoyas run later in the quarter, as Georgetown took a 20-8 lead into the first intermission.
Georgetown (10-7, 3-5 BIG EAST) maintained its momentum early in the second, holding St. John's scoreless for a stretch before Kylie Lavelle broke through with a strong finish through contact and completed the three-point play. That basket ignited a response from the Johnnies, who trimmed the deficit to 11, 24-13, just three minutes into the period. Georgetown answered with a brief push of its own, but St. John's closed the half with a bucket before the break to head into halftime trailing 34-19.
St. John's (14-5, 4-4 BIG EAST) came out of the locker room with renewed energy, cutting the lead back to 11 once again at 36-25 midway through the third quarter. Following a media timeout, Georgetown responded with a late run to close the period and extend its advantage to 47-25.
The Red Storm continued to compete in the final frame, as Moore provided a late spark by scoring five points over the final four minutes. Despite the late push, Georgetown held on for a 59-34 victory.
The Red Storm will close out its two-game road swing at Xavier on Saturday for a 1 p.m. tip off at Cintas Center.
