The Red Storm return all four individual champions from last season
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's track and field team will aim to capture its fourth straight Metropolitan Indoor Championship on Friday at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex in Staten Island, N.Y. Action is scheduled to kick off at 10 a.m. Results can be found at RedStormSports.com under the track and field schedule page.
Since 2010, the Red Storm have claimed seven Metropolitan Indoor Championship titles. In that same time span, the program has never finished lower than fourth in the team standings.
St. John's is slated to have representation in every event except the mile. All women's sections will run first, followed by the men, except for the hurdle final.
Naiara Garcia-Moreno highlights the meet for the Johnnies, stepping down in distance to race in the 1,000-meter run. The Spanish native remains unbeaten during the indoor campaign, winning the 1k at the Youree Spence Garcia Invitational and the mile at the Dr. Sander Scorcher. The sophomore boasts a personal-best time of 2 minutes, 50.5 seconds, which sits fourth all-time in program history.
In the short sprints, Karese Clivesha Kezia Lloyd returns to run the 60-meter dash. Her personal best of 7.70 seconds came just over a month ago at the Wagner Seahawk Shootout.
Off the track, Linn Hertz Saebbo looks to remain unbeaten in the long jump. The former BIG EAST Athlete of the Week in December won the long jump at the Dr. Sander Scorcher with a leap of 5.81 meters (19 feet, 0.75 inches).
Fia Viklund is fresh off a second-place showing last weekend, leaping to a conference-best 12.55 meters (42 feet, 2.25 inches). The Sweden native returns to the runway on Friday.
In the ring, Juliet Smith carries a season-best mark of 15.71 meters (51 feet, 6.5 inches) in the weight throw, set last weekend at the Dr. Sander Scorcher.
To close out the meet, the Johnnies will compete in the 4x200-meter relay, the 4x400-meter relay, the 4x800-meter relay and the distance medley relay.
Following Friday's competition, St. John's remains local and will compete in the Big Apple Classic at Ocean Breeze on Saturday, Feb. 7.
