St. John’s to Face No. 1/1 UConn on Wednesday Night

Red Storm and the top-ranked Huskies will meet at 7:30 p.m. on truTV
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's women's basketball team will travel to Hartford to take on No. 1/1 UConn at PeoplesBank Arena on Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m.
Wednesday's contest will be nationally televised on truTV with JB Long and Renee Montgomery on the call. Autum Johnson will serve as the sideline reporter in Hartford. Additionally, the game will be streamed on HBOMax.
The Red Storm (13-3, 3-2 BIG EAST) have won six of its seven contests heading into Wednesday. In its last time out, The Red Storm rolled past DePaul, 75-58, on New Year's Day at Carnesecca Arena. Four Johnnies- Beautiful Waheed, Sa'Mya Wyatt, Daniela Abies and Shaulana Wagner each scored 11 points to lead the Johnnies to a convincing home victory to kick off 2026.
The Red Storm recorded a season-high 12 blocks Thursday afternoon, tying the program's most since posting a school-record 16 in a win over Saint Peter's on Dec. 1, 2020. The Johnnies also reached the 12-block mark earlier this season at Harvard on Nov. 7. Waheed and Brooke Moore paced the defensive effort with four blocks each, while Kylie Lavelle added three in Queens. The Red Storm pace the BIG EAST and rank 23rd in NCAA Division I, logging 5.3 rejections per game.
Through 16 games, the Red Storm have been highly efficient offensively, shooting 47.7% from the field, a mark that ranks second in the BIG EAST and 21st nationally. Moore, the team's leading scorer at 14.4 points per game, is shooting 59.0% from the field. The Kennesaw, Ga., native also sits second the conference and ranks among the top-50 at the free throw line, knocking down 60 of her 80 attempts (75.0%).
Wagner scored 11 points for the third straight game and added three assists in the contest. The graduate student guard remains one of the nation's premier distributors, sitting 26th nationally with and atop the BIG EAST averaging 5.4 assists per contest.
St. John's will return to Hartford for the first time since it last defeated UConn, 69-64, on Feb. 21, 2023. The Johnnies outlasted the then-No. 4/5 Huskies inside PeoplesBank Arena, formerly the XL Center and are one of just three teams to beat UConn at the venue, dating back to 2019. The two programs will meet for the 71st time in a series that dates back to Jan. 26, 1978 with the Huskies leading, 52-18. The Huskies have won 44 consecutive BIG EAST regular season games, dating back to its last loss to the Red Storm.
The 12-time National Champions Huskies (15-0, 6-0 BIG EAST) enter the matchup carrying a 31-game winning streak and are one of five remaining undefeated teams in NCAA Division I. Top-ranked UConn most recently downed BIG EAST opponent Seton Hall, 84-48, in Hartford on Jan. 3 to open up 2026.
Sarah Strong paced the team against Seton Hall with a well-rounded performance of 18 points, eight rebounds, four assists, four steals, and one block. The sophomore forward leads the conference and ranks 15th nationally with 3.5 steals per game. The Durham, N.C., native is the league's leading scorer at 18.0 points per game.
UConn paces both the conference and the nation, shooting 41.2% from beyond the arc while averaging 24.3 assists per game. The Huskies also lead the BIG EAST and rank among the top 10 in the country with an impressive plus-37.5 scoring margin. Azzi Fudd has been on target from long range, leading the conference and ranking third nationally with 49 three-pointers shooting at a 48.9% clip from beyond-the-arc.
