St. John’s Fall to No. 1/1 UConn on the Road

Beautiful Waheed paces the Red Storm with 14 points at PeoplesBank Arena
HARTFORD, Conn. – The St. John's women's basketball team (13-4, 3-3 BIG EAST) fell to No. 1/1 UConn, 88-43, on Wednesday night at PeoplesBank Arena.
Junior guard Beautiful Waheed led St. John's with 14 points, tying her highest total in conference play, and reached double-figures for the third consecutive game. The Milwaukee native shot 5-for-9 (55.6%) from the floor and matched a season-high with three makes from beyond-the-arc.
Sa'Mya Wyatt finished the night with nine points on 4-of-6 (66.7%) shooting and Brooke Moore added seven points in Hartford.
The Red Storm controlled the glass, outrebounding the Huskies, 28-15, on Wednesday night. The Johnnies limited UConn to a season-low on the boards and were just the third team to win the rebounding battle this season. Daniela Abies led all players with six boards.
UConn delivered an efficient offensive performance, shooting 59.0 percent from the field and 90.0 percent at the free-throw line,. The Huskies were paced by Sarah Strong, who finished with a game-high 24 points, five assists, and six steals.
UConn (16-0, 7-0 BIG EAST) opened the game with eight unanswered points before Wyatt knocked down a mid-range jumper to put the Johnnies on the board. The Huskies followed with a 12-point run to extend the lead to 20-2. Baskets from Waheed and Moore trimmed the deficit to 20-7, but UConn maintained its momentum and closed the first quarter ahead 28-9.
St. John's showed resilience early in the second quarter, using an 8-2 run led by Waheed and Wyatt to cut the margin to 13, 30-17. UConn quickly reasserted control, holding the Red Storm to just one field goal over the final five minutes of the half. Behind 19 first-half points from Strong, the Huskies carried a commanding 50-22 lead into the break.
Azzi Fudd and Ashlyn Shade sparked UConn from beyond the arc in the third quarter, as the Huskies shot 50.0 percent from three during the period. The Johnnies outrebounded UConn 8-5 in the frame. The Huskies extended their lead to as many as 40 points and entered the fourth quarter with a 72-32 advantage.
Waheed and Janeya Grant connected on a pair of three-pointers to highlight St. John's scoring in the final period, while Julie Bahati and Kyla Hayes saw action late. The Huskies narrowly outscored the Johnnies in the final frame, 16-11, as UConn closed out the contest with an 88-43 victory.
The Red Storm will return to Carnesecca Arena on Saturday, Jan. 10 to host Butler for Girl Scout Day at 2 p.m. in Queens.
