Dylan Darling scored 18 of his game-high 23 points in the second half to lead the Johnnies to their 11th-straight victory
PROVIDENCE, R.I. - No. 17/17 St. John's men's basketball team (20-5, 13-1 BIG EAST) earned a gritty road victory over Providence on Saturday, 79-69, inside Amica Mutual Pavilion.
Redshirt junior guard Dylan Darling scored 18 of his game-high 23 points after intermission to help guide the Red Storm to its 11th-straight victory. St. John's win over the Friars marked the program's 10th consecutive BIG EAST road victory dating back to last season, which is the Johnnies longest ever stretch of conference road wins.
Darling added eight rebounds, three steals and shot 8-for-9 at the free-throw line in 27 minutes off the bench. Teammates Zuby Ejiofor (14) and Oziyah Sellers (11) both scored in double-figures while Bryce Hopkins led all players with nine boards and Dillon Mitchell matched a career-high with six assists.
The Johnnies' bench outscored the Friars, 31-3. St. John also matched a season-low with five turnovers and converted 14 Providence giveaways into 14 points.
After Providence (11-15, 4-11 BIG EAST) tallied the first bucket of the afternoon, the Red Storm responded with a 10-0 run to grab an early lead. The Johnnies' forced three steals during that stretch, including an intercepted in-bounds pass that led to a slam for Hopkins and force a Friars timeout. Ian Jackson tallied the next seven points for the Johnnies as the early cushion expanded to 15-4 at the 15:18 mark.
Darling and Joson Sanon splashed back-to-back triples to push the advantage to 13, 25-12, with 11:03 remaining in the first half. The Friars retaliated with eight unanswered points to climb back within five, 25-20.
Lefteris Liotopoulos cashed in from long-range to spring the lead back to double-digits and Darling finished a driving lay-up to bring the advantage to 12, 34-22. The Friars engineered a 7-0 scoring run over the final two minutes of the first half as the Red Storm went into the break with a 34-29 lead.
In the second half, Providence took its first lead since it was 2-0 at the 17:18 mark, 36-35, with a pair of free-throws from Ryan Mela.
After a lengthy stoppage resulting from a flagrant two foul and ejection of Providence's Duncan Powell, the Johnnies rattled off eight consecutive points in 30 seconds capped off by a Darling 3-pointer to separate itself by seven, 47-40 with 13:55 to go. Darling stayed hot nailing another triple and a lay-up to tally eight straight points for St. John's to go up nine, 52-43, with 12:32 to play.
Over the final 12 minutes, the Red Storm clung onto its lead never allowing the Friars to come closer than seven points en route to its 20th victory of the season.
The Red Storm will be back in action on Wednesday at Marquette at 9 p.m. ET on TNT.
