The Red Storm men’s basketball team improves to 8-0 on the road with victory in Milwaukee
MILWAUKEE - The No. 17/16 St. John's men's basketball team edged Marquette at Fiserv Forum, 76-70, to extend its winning streak to 12 games on Wednesday.
The 12-straight victories match the program's longest since St. John's started 12-0 to begin the 2018-19 season. The winning streak ranks the third longest active in NCAA Division I. After tonight's victory and UConn falling to Creighton at home, St. John's (21-5, 14-1 BIG EAST) moves into sole possession for first place in the BIG EAST standings.
St. John's improved to 8-0 on the road this season, its best start away from home in nearly a century. It marks the first time the Johnnies won their first eight on the road since the 1928-29 season, when St. John's won 10-straight under James "Buck" Freeman.
Bryce Hopkins registered a stellar performance on Wednesday, finishing with 23 points and 10 rebounds. The graduate student shot 8-for-14 from the floor and 6-for-7 from the free throw line. Hopkins' scoring total marked his highest since he poured in a season-high 26 on Nov. 25 against Baylor.
Oziyah Sellers delivered his fourth double-digit scoring performance over the last five games tallying 12 points against the Golden Eagles. Zuby Ejiofor recorded 10 points, six rebounds and three blocks in his 15th double-figure scoring outing in his last 16 appearances.
Three-time BIG EAST Freshman of the Week Nigel James Jr. paced the Golden Eagles leading all scorers with 25 points on 11-of-21 shooting.
After winning the tap, the Red Storm opened the scoring with a made 3-pointer from Ian Jackson. Joson Sanon broke away for a fastbreak slam to take a quick 5-0 lead. The Golden Eagles tied the score at 11 at the 13:35 mark before the Johnnies rattled off an 11-2 run closed out by a triple from Sellers to take a nine-point edge, 22-13.
As the opening stanza drew near a close Marquette tightened the St. John's lead, pulling within a possession with five minutes to go. Lefteris Liotopoulos recorded the team's next seven points before sparking a 10-2 spurt to propel the advantage back to double-figures. St. John's went into the locker room in front, 44-35.
In the second half, Marquette engineered an 11-0 scoring run to take its first lead since the opening minutes of the game, 46-44, before Ejiofor knotted the scoreline halting the Golden Eagles dominant stretch with 15 minutes remaining.
Marquette stretched its lead to as many as six, 56-50, before awakening the Red Storm to a 9-0 spurt of its own, capped off by a Hopkins 3-pointer to jump back ahead by three. Hopkins caught fire scoring 10 points during a pivotal 17-5 run for St. John's. The stretch was closed by a straightaway triple from Sanon to recapture the lead, 67-61, with 6:37 left to play.
Leading by seven going into the final four minutes, Marquette responded once again trimming the deficit to as few as two with James Jr. finishing a three-point play with 27 seconds left to go, 72-70. Ejiofor and Hopkins iced the game with four free throws to secure the victory. It marked the first time St. John's has won in Milwaukee in back-to-back years since 2013-14 and 2014-15.
The Red Storm will be back in action on Saturday when it hosts Creighton at Madison Square Garden for a noon tip-off on FOX.
