St. John’s Takes Down UConn in BIG EAST Opener

The Red Storm improve to 6-3 in 2026
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's women's tennis team opened BIG EAST play with a decisive 4-2 victory on Friday afternoon.
The Red Storm (6-3, 1-0 BIG EAST) secured the doubles point before adding three singles wins to earn their fourth victory in the last five matches.
After dropping the opening doubles match on the No. 2 court, the tandem of Alicia Gomez and Abi Redman responded with a 6-3 victory over Victoria Matos and Ela Platenikova on the No. 1 court, improving to 8-1 as a pair this season. In the deciding doubles contest, Charlotta Buss and Nao Kojima delivered a 6-4 triumph over Cameron Didion and Isabella Asenov to clinch the point for the Red Storm.
The Huskies claimed the first two singles matches on the No. 2 and No. 6 courts before Redman recorded her second victory of the day on the No. 4 court, defeating Cameron Didion, 6-3, 6-4.
With the match tied at 2-2, Kojima secured her second win of the afternoon in a three-set thriller, besting Victoria Matos, 6-0, 4-6, 6-3, to give the Red Storm a 3-2 advantage.
On the No. 1 court, Victoria Papadopolou sealed the victory for St. John's with a commanding 6-3, 6-4 win over Ela Platenikova.
With the win, the Red Storm improve to 14-1 against the Huskies dating back to 2004.
St. John's returns to action on Friday, Feb. 27, when Lauren Leo's squad hosts New Haven at the USTA National Tennis Center. First serve is scheduled for 12:15 p.m.
