Johnnies will Host Chargers on Friday Before Traveling to Face Friars on Saturday
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's women's tennis team is set for a two-match weekend slate against New Haven and Providence.
The Red Storm will host the Chargers at the USTA National Tennis Center on Friday before traveling to the Providence Tennis Center to face the Friars on Saturday. First serve against New Haven is scheduled for 12:15 p.m., while Saturday's match is set to begin at 4:15 p.m.
Last weekend, Lauren Leo's squad opened BIG EAST play with a convincing 4-2 victory over UConn. Alicia Gomez and Abi Redman continued their strong play in doubles, improving to 8-1 on the season, before the Johnnies secured the win in singles action to move to 6-3 overall.
New Haven travels to Queens for the first all-time meeting between the two programs, competing in its inaugural season at the NCAA Division I level. The Chargers enter the matchup with a 1-1 record, opening the season with a 5-2 victory over Merrimack before falling to Hofstra, 4-3, in a tightly contested match. Last season, New Haven advanced to the NCAA Division II Tournament regional qualifiers before falling to St. Thomas Aquinas.
Providence will host St. John's for the 18th meeting dating back to 2004. The Red Storm remain undefeated against the Friars, including a 4-1 victory in the 2024 BIG EAST Tournament that propelled the Johnnies to the conference championship.
Entering Saturday's matchup, Providence holds a 1-4 record in 2026, with its lone win coming in the season opener against Franklin Pierce. The Friars have since dropped four straight matches, including a loss to BIG EAST foe Seton Hall in their most recent outing.
Following this weekend's matches, the Red Storm will return to action on March 3, traveling to DeLand, Fla., to take on Stetson. First serve from the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center is set for 10 a.m.
