The Red Storm men’s basketball team has won 13 games in a row for the first time since the 1984-85 season
NEW YORK - The No. 17/16 St. John's men's basketball team extended its longest winning streak in 41 years to 13 on Saturday with an 81-52 triumph over Creighton at Madison Square Garden before a crowd of 19,328.
All 13 victories during the streak have come in BIG EAST play as the Red Storm improved to 15-1 in conference action. The Johnnies' active winning streak also ranks as the third longest in NCAA Division I.
St. John's (22-5, 15-1 BIG EAST) 29-point margin of victory on Saturday was the program's most lopsided win in conference play since downing Butler by 34 points on Feb. 18, 2022, at Carnesecca Arena.
The Red Storm's defense was suffocating, notably in the second half where it held the Bluejays without a field goal for nearly nine minutes. Over the final 20 minutes, Creighton (14-14, 8-9 BIG EAST) was limited to just 7-for-26 (26.9%) shooting from the floor. The Bluejays, who defeated No. 5/5 UConn on Wednesday, did not have a player in double-figures and committed a season-high 18 turnovers.
Four players finished in double-figures for the Johnnies with three totaling 15 points or more. Dylan Darling paced all players with 17 points on 5-of-7 (71.4%) shooting for his third double-digit scoring effort in the last four games. Bryce Hopkins logged his second consecutive double-double, tallying 15 points and 10 boards.
Zuby Ejiofor reached double-digits for the 16th time in his last 17 appearances finishing with 15 points. The big man shot 66.7 percent (4-6 FG) and 87.5 percent (7-8 FT) from the charity stripe. Dillon Mitchell was all over the floor recording 10 rebounds and a career-high seven assists without a turnover in the winning effort.
As a team, St. John's shot 87.0 percent (20-23) from the free throw line, its second highest mark this season.
The Red Storm started the game with an 8-0 scoring run forcing a Creighton timeout only 1:41 into the contest. The early edge expanded to 12 after consecutive buckets from Ejiofor, 22-10, before the under-12 media timeout.
After the Bluejays climbed within six, Darling forced a steal and found a streaking Ejiofor for a thunderous two-handed jam in transition with just under eight minutes to go. The Johnnies' advantage ballooned back to double-digits and ended the half on an 8-0 run. St. John's held Creighton scoreless for the final 4:21 of the opening stanza and took 15-point cushion, 42-27, into the locker room.
In the second half, after Creighton chopped its deficit to 10, St. John's took complete control of the game with a 33-10 scoring run over a 14:04 span. During that stretch, Creighton made just three field goals and was held without a make from the floor for over eight minutes of game time. During that span nine different players scored for the Johnnies, as Sadiku Ibine Ayo's layup capped it off to push the lead as many as 33, 77-44, with 2:22 remaining.
As the St. John's reserves entered the game late, Handje Tamba dropped a skyhook in the paint for his first points in BIG EAST competition. With the win, St. John's has now won six straight at MSG and over the last two seasons own a 20-2 record at The World's Most Famous Arena.
The Red Storm also improved to 4-0 on Johnnies Day, the University's annual celebration of the school's global impact.
St. John's returns to action on Wednesday at No. 5/5 Connecticut inside PeoplesBank Arena. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. with the national broadcast airing on Peacock and NBC Sports Network.
