Red Storm carries the nation’s second longest winning streak into marquee showdown with the Huskies in Hartford
QUEENS, N.Y. - The No. 15/15 St. John's men's basketball team (22-5, 15-1 BIG EAST) will visit No. 6/6 Connecticut (25-3, 15-2 BIG EAST) on Wednesday for a top-15 showdown in Hartford.
Wednesday's marquee BIG EAST matchup will air on Peacock and NBC Sports Network with John Fanta and Robbie Hummel on the call from PeoplesBank Arena. Caroline Pineda will serve as the sideline reporter.
The LEARFIELD St. John's Radio Network broadcast will be available with John Minko and Tarik Turner on 880 AM ESPN New York, the ESPN New York App, the Varsity Network, TuneIn, Sirius XM Channel 85, the SiriusXM App and the St. John's Red Storm App. Westwood One will carry the national audio broadcast with Scott Graham and Tim Welsh on the call from Hartford.
St. John's enters the contest winning its last 13 games and 15 of its past 16 contests. The 13-game winning streak is currently the second longest in the country, trailing only unbeaten Miami (OH). The unbeaten span is the program's longest win streak in 41 years since the 1984-85 Final Four Team won 19 consecutive games from Dec. 22 to Feb. 23. All the wins during the current stretch have come against BIG EAST opponents.
Heading into the road tilt, St. John's holds an unscathed 8-0 record away from home, the program's best road start in nearly 100 years, when it went 10-0 on the road to start the 1928-29 campaign. Dating back to Feb. 19, 2025, the Johnnies have captured 11-straight BIG EAST road contests, their best mark in program history. The 11 straight BIG EAST road wins mark the most by any member of the league since Villanova won 13 straight from Jan. 31, 2015 to Feb. 9, 2016. Wednesday's contest will also mark St. John's first top-15 road showdown since Jan. 12, 1991, when the No. 10 Johnnies outlasted the No. 9 Huskies, 72-59, at Gampel Pavilion.
The Red Storm is coming off a rout of Creighton, 81-52, on Saturday at Madison Square Garden. St. John's led wire-to-wire as the suffocating Red Storm defense held the Bluejays to 32.4 percent shooting from the floor.
Bryce Hopkins was named the BIG EAST Player of the Week on Monday, earning the accolade for the third time in his career. The graduate student averaged 19.0 points and 10.0 rebounds per game turning in back-to-back double-doubles in wins over Marquette and Creighton. During the Red Storm's winning streak, the Oak Park, Ill., native is averaging 15.0 points and 7.2 rebounds per game.
Dylan Darling has come on strong off the bench recently scoring 16 points or more in three of his last four contests. He is averaging 9.2 points per game on 37.5 percent shooting from deep during the squad's 13-game winning streak. Preseason BIG EAST Player of the Year Zuby Ejiofor continues to dominate, posting double-digit scoring performances in 16 out of his last 17 appearances.
Wednesday's meeting marks the 75th between the two programs with St. John's leading the series, 40-34. The Red Storm has taken each of the last three contests, its longest stretch against the Huskies since the 1999-2000 season. In the first meeting this season, then-No. 22/22 St John's defeated then-No. 3/3 UConn, 81-72, snapping the Huskies' 18-game winning streak, for its highest ranked win at The World's Most Famous Arena since 2011.
After falling to Creighton last Wednesday, UConn bounced back on Saturday utilizing a dominant second half run to top Villanova in Philadelphia, 73-63. Braylon Mullins was tabbed BIG EAST Freshman of the Week for the third time this season after averaging 17.5 points and 4.5 rebounds per game over the last two contests.
All five UConn starters average double-figures in scoring and the Huskies rank ninth in NCAA Division I averaging 18.5 assists per game. On the other side of the floor, UConn ranks 12th in the country in defensive efficiency according to KenPom.
The Huskies hold a winning streak of their own capturing each of their last 26 contests in Hartford. St. John's was the last team to defeat UConn at PeoplesBank Arena, formerly XL Center, earning an 85-74 victory on Jan. 15, 2023.
Following Wednesday's contest, St. John's will return to Madison Square Garden on Saturday for its annual "White Out" game against third place RV/RV Villanova on FOX.
