Red Storm improve to 10-5 after convincing win in Philadelphia
PHILADELPHIA – The St. John's women's tennis team (10–5, 2–1 BIG EAST) defeated Saint Joseph's (1–10), 4–1, on Friday afternoon at the SJU Tennis Complex in Philadelphia.
The Red Storm secured the doubles point with wins on the No. 1 and No. 2 courts before claiming three singles victories to seal the match.
The duo of Alicia Gomez and Abi Redman opened doubles play with a 6–2 victory over Elena Fleming and June Tronhus on the top court. Victoria Papadopoulou and Noemi Babikova followed with a 6–2 win on the No. 2 court to clinch the doubles point.
Holding a 1–0 advantage, Babikova picked up her second win of the day with a 6–0, 6–4 decision over Fleming on the No. 2 court. Nao Kojima extended the lead to 3–0 with a 6–4, 6–2 victory over Tronhus.
After Saint Joseph's claimed a point on the No. 5 court, Gomez secured the match for the Red Storm with a commanding 6–2, 6–1 win over Claudia Perez-Garcia on the No. 6 court.
With the victory, St. John's improves to 10–5 overall and earns a win in the first-ever meeting between the two programs.
The Red Storm will return to action on Sunday against BIG EAST opponent Villanova. First serve from the Villanova Tennis Complex is scheduled for 11 a.m.
