St. John’s Tops Villanova, 5-2 on Sunday

The Red Storm improve to 3-1 in BIG EAST play
VILLANOVA, Pa. – The St. John's women's tennis team (11-5, 3-1 BIG EAST) defeated conference foe Villanova (9-6, 1-1 BIG EAST), 5-2, on Sunday.
The Wildcats claimed the doubles point, taking two of three matches after Alicia Gomez and Abi Redman earned a 6-2 victory on the No. 1 court over Maggie Gehrig and Emi Callahan.
St. John's responded in singles play, winning five of six matches to secure the victory. Redman evened the score on the No. 5 court with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Lauren Monti. Gomez followed with a 6-4, 6-0 decision against Olivia Kutlova on the No. 3 court to give the Red Storm a 2-1 lead.
Charlotta Buss extended the advantage with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Jenna Stevens at No. 4 singles. Victoria Papadopoulou clinched the match on the No. 1 court, defeating Olivia Corcoran, 6-2, 6-2.
After Villanova picked up a point on the No. 2 court, Nao Kojima capped the day with a 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 win to secure the 5-2 final.
With the victory, the Red Storm improve to 17-2 all-time against the Wildcats and have won five straight in the series.
St. John's returns to action on March 28 for a BIG EAST matchup against Georgetown in Queens. First serve time and venue will be announced at a later date.
