The Red Storm are seeking third straight victory in conference clash
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's women's tennis team will open a BIG EAST weekend slate against Georgetown (3-7, 1-1 BIG EAST) on Saturday in Flushing. First serve from the Queens College Tennis Center is scheduled for 6 p.m.
The Red Storm (11-5, 3-1 BIG EAST) return to conference play following a 5-2 victory over Villanova last Sunday in Pennsylvania. Despite dropping the doubles point, St. John's responded with a dominant showing in singles, winning five of six matches to secure the win.
Abi Redman, Alicia Gomez, and Charlotta Buss each earned straight-set victories before Victoria Papadopoulou clinched the match with a decisive 6-2, 6-2 win over Olivia Corcoran on the No. 1 court.
Georgetown enters Saturday's contest having dropped six of their last seven matches, with their lone win during that stretch coming in a 6-1 decision over George Washington on March 4. After opening the spring season 2-2 with wins over Howard and conference foe Marquette, they will look to get back on track in Queens.
Last season, the Hoyas posted a 4-5 record in BIG EAST play and advanced to the conference tournament quarterfinals before falling to eventual champion Xavier, 4-0.
Saturday's matchup marks the 18th meeting between the two programs since 2004, with the Red Storm holding an undefeated record in the series. It will also be the fifth consecutive season the teams meet on a hard court. In last year's meeting on April 4, St. John's earned a 4-3 victory in Washington, D.C.
Following Saturday's match, the Red Storm will return to action on Wednesday, hosting FDU in Queens. First serve from the USTA National Tennis Center is set for 12:15 p.m.
