The Johnnies rallied late but ultimately fell to the Gaels in New Rochelle

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. — The St. John's softball team dropped a midweek contest to Iona, 5-4, on Tuesday afternoon at Donald E. Walsh Field at Rice Oval.

The Red Storm (22-10, 3-3 BIG EAST) were held hitless through the first four innings before rallying late, but the Gaels (7-14, 4-5 MAAC) responded in the sixth to hold on for the one-run victory.

St. John's totaled four runs on six hits in the contest, with Jess Bianco and Avery Neuman each recording a hit and an RBI. Ana Serafinko, Makenna Meadows, Ava Fierst and Natasha Limbani each added hits as well.

Iona struck first in the third inning on an inside-the-park home run, before adding two runs in the fourth on a two-run double to extend the lead to 3-0.

The Red Storm broke through in the fifth inning. Meadows, Fierst and Bianco recorded three consecutive singles, with Bianco driving in the first run. Later in the inning, a rundown allowed Fierst to score and trim the deficit to 3-2.

In the bottom of the fifth, Loreley Francia recorded the 500^th strikeout of her career.

St. John's tied the game in the sixth inning. Neuman delivered an RBI single to second base to bring home Jacqueline Scott before a throwing error by the catcher allowed Limbani to score, giving the Red Storm a 4-3 advantage.

Iona answered in the bottom half of the inning, taking advantage of a pair of walks and a defensive miscue to score two unearned runs and regain the lead, 5-4.

The Red Storm put the tying run on base in the seventh inning, but Iona recorded the final out to secure the victory.

St. John's returns home to host its first BIG EAST series of the season at Red Storm Field against Butler from March 27-29. Friday and Sunday's contests will be streamed live on ESPN+, while Saturday's matchup will be available to watch on the St. John's Red Storm YouTube channel.
