Red Storm claim seventh victory in last nine matches
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The St. John's women's tennis team swept past Bethune-Cookman on Wednesday, 4-0 at the South Fulton Tennis Center in Daytona Beach, Fla.
The Red Storm (9-4, 2-0 BIG EAST) took the doubles team point to start the day before taking all three singles matches to earn the win against the Wildcats.
To open the match, Charlotta Buss and Giulia Bizzari would cruise past Zahara El-Zein and Jalayah Shaw, 6-2 on the no. 2 court. The Johnnies would claim the doubles point as Bethune-Cookman was unable to field a pairing on the no. 3 court.
Up 1-0, Alicia Gomez extended the lead to two after winning by default on the no. 1 court. Buss would push the score to 3-0 after dominating Rosalida Asumwa, 6-0, 6-1 on the no. 4 court. Noemi Babikova would clinch the victory for the Red Storm taking down Maria Vargas 6-1, 6-1 on the no. 2 court.
With the victory, St. John's has now defeated the Wildcats in consecutive seasons, improving their overall record to 9-4.
Following the two match swing in the Sunshine State, the Johnnies are back in action on March 13, when they host BIG EAST foe DePaul at the USTA National Tennis Center. First serve is set for 12:15 p.m.
