The Johnnies enter conference play following a five-game weekend in North Carolina
QUEENS, N.Y. — The St. John's softball team will open BIG EAST play this weekend against UConn in a three-game series relocated to Baker Athletics Complex at Columbia due to unplayable field conditions at Red Storm Field.
The Red Storm and Huskies will play a doubleheader on Sunday at 12 p.m. and 2:30 p.m., followed by the series finale on Monday at 1 p.m. All three contests will be streamed live on the St. John's Red Storm YouTube channel.
St. John's (14-6, 0-0 BIG EAST) enters the weekend after competing at the Battle at the Max in Greenville, N.C., where the Johnnies earned two victories over Campbell. The Red Storm extended their neutral-site winning streak to 13 games with a walk-off win against the Camels before eventually falling to Rider.
The Johnnies opened the Battle at the Max with an 8-3 victory over Campbell behind a three-hit, three-RBI performance from Cassidy Stouffer and a two-run double from Natasha Limbani. Loreley Francia earned the win in the circle before Ana Serafinko closed the game with five strikeouts over the final 2.1 innings.
St. John's followed with a walk-off 3-2 victory over Campbell the following day as Sarah Post delivered the game-winning single in the seventh inning. Jess Bianco reached base twice, stole two bases and scored the game-tying run, while Serafinko tossed a complete game with 10 strikeouts.
The Red Storm also produced its second-highest scoring inning of the season in its defeat against Rider, plating six runs in the fourth inning behind run-scoring hits from Bianco, Stouffer and Limbani. Madison Konopka also added a two-run triple in the same inning.
Following the Battle at the Max, Serafinko earned BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll recognition on March 2 after posting a 1-1 record with a 1.83 ERA and 22 strikeouts across 15.1 innings in three appearances. The Chino Hills, Calif., native also went 3-for-5 at the plate and scored one run.
Serafinko ranks second in NCAA Division I with 98 strikeouts and sits seventh nationally in innings pitched with 66.2 frames. The senior enters the weekend with 570 career strikeouts, just 20 shy of breaking Tori Free's program record of 589.
Headlined by Serafinko and Francia, the Red Storm pitching staff ranks among the nation's top units, sitting 11th in NCAA Division I in strikeouts per seven innings (7.77), 37th in strikeout-to-walk ratio (2.45), and 44th in team ERA (3.07).
Offensively, Bianco leads the Johnnies with a .435 batting average, 30 hits and 16 RBIs. Limbani has driven in 16 runs of her own with three home runs.
London Slade has been a key offensive contributor, batting .359 and standing as one of just 19 qualifying NCAA Division I players who has yet to strike out this season.
UConn enters the series with victories over Akron, Florida Gulf Coast, Liberty and Charleston Southern, including a 13-0 win over the latter. The Huskies also rank second in the BIG EAST in doubles and are led offensively by Savannah Ring (.345) and Cat Petteys (.317), while Kaitlyn Breslin paces the lineup with 14 RBIs and four home runs.
In the circle, Jessica Walker owns a 2.97 ERA with 27 strikeouts in 37.2 innings and holds the best strikeout-to-walk ratio in the BIG EAST.
St. John's won two of three games against UConn in last season's series from May 2-4 in Storrs, Conn., and holds a 4-2 edge over the Huskies in the conference foes' last six meetings.
Following the UConn series, the Johnnies return to Queens to open play at Red Storm Field on March 12 at 2 p.m. against Iona.
