Sixth-Seeded St. John’s Will Meet Third-Seeded Seton Hall in BIG EAST Tournament Quarterfinal

UNCASVILLE, Conn. – The sixth-seeded St. John's women's basketball team will face third-seeded Seton Hall in the BIG EAST Tournament Quarterfinal on Saturday night at 9:30 p.m.
The Johnnies will compete in the quarterfinal round for the 16th consecutive year, dating to 2010. With a win, St. John's would advance into the semifinals for the first time since 2020.
Tomorrow night's contest will air on Peacock with Adam Giardino and Meghan Culmo on the call from Mohegan Sun Arena. Meghan Capanna will serve as the sideline reporter.
The Red Storm (22-10, 11-9 BIG EAST) opened the tournament with a gritty 53-48 victory over 11th-seeded Xavier on Friday afternoon in Uncasville. Trailing by six entering the fourth quarter of a defensive battle, the Johnnies opened the final frame with a 12-2 scoring run to regain control. After Xavier clawed back to get within a possession in the final minute, the Red Storm held on to advance outscoring the Musketeers, 18-7, in the fourth stanza.
Brooke Moore paced the late-game surge, scoring all 16 of her points in the second half on 7-of-8 (87.5%) shooting from the floor. The All-BIG EAST Second Team selection leads the team, averaging 12.2 points per game on 52.3% shooting.
Sa'Mya Wyatt posted her first double-double of the season, totaling 16 points and 12 rebounds on Friday afternoon in the victory over the Musketeers. The All-BIG EAST Honorable Mention choice is averaging 11.1 points and 5.0 boards per game, both marks rank second on the team.
Sophomore Janeya Grant was the third Johnnie to finish in double-figures, tallying 13 points on Friday afternoon.
St. John's will match up with Seton Hall in the BIG EAST Tournament for the 11th time and the first since 2019. The Red Storm hold a 7-2 all-time record over the Pirates in the conference tournament. In the last postseason meeting, the Johnnies throttled the Pirates in the opening round at Wintrust Arena, 76-51, on March 9, 2019.
For the first time since the 2019-20 campaign, St. John's swept Seton Hall in the regular season. The Red Storm outlasted Seton Hall, 67-61, on Feb. 7 at Carnesecca Arena. In the return meeting in New Jersey, the Johnnies pulled out a 59-56 victory behind a 12-point, 19-rebound double-double from Daniela Abies. The redshirt junior's rebounding total marked the highest by a Red Storm player since Kayla Charles collected 20 boards on Dec. 9, 2018.
Seton Hall (18-11, 12-8 BIG EAST) enters the BIG EAST Tournament as the third seed, entering the postseason on a three-game skid. The Pirates earned the third seed and a bye out of the first round for the second straight year.
