Red Storm comeback falls short at Mohegan Sun Arena
UNCASVILLE, Conn. – Sixth-seeded St. John's women's basketball team fell to third-seeded Seton Hall, 63-61, on Saturday night BIG EAST Tournament Quarterfinals at Mohegan Sun Arena.
The Pirates led by as many as 13 late in the second quarter before the Red Storm rallied back to make it a one-point game on three separate occasions, but ultimately fell in Uncasville.
Three Johnnies reached double-digits with Jailah Donald leading the way with a career-high 15 points. Shaulana Wagner and Brooke Moore both recorded 11 points, with Wagner dishing out a game-high seven assists in the outing. The trio shot 14-of-22 (63.6%) from the floor and paced the fourth-quarter comeback.
Jordana Codio fueled the Pirates' offense, accounting for more than half the team's total points with a career-best 35-point performance.
Through the first three minutes, the Red Storm and the Pirates exchanged baskets, resulting in a 4-4 tie. Seton Hall then built a six-point lead after Jordana Codio drained back-to-back three-pointers, scoring all 10 of the Pirates' points to give them a 10-4 edge. St. John's responded before the first media timeout, trimming the deficit to four at 12-8. Seton Hall extended its advantage to 16-10, but baskets from Moore and Janeya Grant helped the Johnnies close the gap to 16-14 by the end of the first quarter.
Ari Woodard opened the second quarter with a three-pointer for Seton Hall, before Grant answered with a short jumper at the 9:12 mark to make it 19-16. The Pirates then caught fire from beyond the arc, putting together a 10-0 run to stretch their lead to 29-16 midway through the period. St. John's fought back from long range, as Donald, Ariel Little, and Kylie Lavelle each connected from three-point range, cutting a 13-point deficit down to five heading into halftime, 37-32.
The 3-point shootout continued after halftime, with Moore and Sa'Mya Wyatt joining the scoring from beyond the arc. Donald knocked down her fifth triple of the night at the 4:49 mark, but Codio quickly answered to keep Seton Hall ahead by eight, 51-43. A highlight-reel alley-oop connection from Wagner to Moore helped bring the score to 53-47 heading into the end of the third quarter.
St. John's kept pushing in the final period, sparked by a solo 7-0 run from Wagner midway through the quarter that cut the Pirates' lead to just one, 58-57. Seton Hall moved back in front by three with less than a minute left in regulation, but Wyatt delivered a clutch jumper in the paint to make it 62-61. After the Pirates split at the charity stripe the Red Storm had a chance with 1.2 seconds remaining but were unable to convert and ultimately fell to the Pirates.
St. John's tallied a 22-11 overall record and an 11-9 mark in conference play.
