PROVIDENCE, R.I. — The St. John's softball team fell to Providence, 6-0, on Sunday afternoon in the finale of a three-game BIG EAST series at Glay Field.
The Red Storm (26-16, 6-9 BIG EAST) recorded two hits in the contest with Madison Konopka and Natasha Limbani each recording singles.
Ana Serafinko went the distance in the circle, recording nine strikeouts on 140 pitches. Sunday's performance marked the senior southpaw's second consecutive showing with eight strikeouts or more. On the year, the Chino Hills, Calif., native has posted eight or more punchouts in 16 contests and holds a 2.70 ERA.
Both teams were held scoreless through the first four innings as the starting pitchers kept the offenses off the scoreboard. Serafinko recorded a pair of strikeouts in the first and third frames to limit the Friars high-powered bats in the early going.
St. John's had its best scoring opportunity in the third inning. The Red Storm loaded the bases on a walk by Alyssa Platero, a bunt single from Konopka and a second walk by Jess Bianco, but the Red Storm was unable to bring a run across.
Providence (19-14, 10-2 BIG EAST) broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the fifth inning with a six-run frame behind a three RBI double and three-run homer to take control of the contest.
The Red Storm was unable to mount a response over the final two innings on Sunday in the Ocean State.
St. John's will return home for a midweek matchup against Manhattan at 3 p.m. on April 15 at Red Storm Field in Queens.
