The Red Storm become first back-to-back conference champions since 2021-2022
CAYCE, S.C. – The top-seeded St. John's men's tennis team took down second-seeded DePaul, 4-1 to capture its seventh BIG EAST title in the last 12 seasons on Sunday in Cayce, S.C.
Semen Agynskyy was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player after posting three singles victories and contributing to two doubles wins over the three-day event.
Head Coach Dillon Pottish secured his fourth BIG EAST championship at the helm, as the Red Storm claimed their ninth all-time conference title, the most in league history.
The victory also marks St. John's first back-to-back championships since DePaul accomplished the feat in 2021 and 2022.
St. John's set the tone early by securing the doubles point. Adam Groves and Agynskyy opened with a 6-1 win over Thomas Giles and Sven Moser on the No. 3 court, before Danilo Raicevic and Radomir Tomic clinched the point with a 6-2 victory over Sebastian Medica and Augusto Cano at No. 1 doubles.
Carrying that momentum into singles play, Agynskyy earned a 6-3, 6-3 win over Pablo Torres Almeida to extend the lead. Tomic followed with a 6-4, 6-4 triumph against Alejandro Gandini, giving the Red Storm a 3-0 advantage. DePaul picked up a point on the No. 2 court to stay alive.
Venedikt Tsirikidze clinched the championship on the No. 5 court, rallying for a 4-6, 6-1, 6-1 victory over Andy Hadziabdic to secure the title.
St. John's will now await its placement in the 2026 NCAA Tournament. The selection show is scheduled for April 27 at 5 p.m. on NCAA.com, where the 64-team field will be announced.
