Post’s grand slam powers the Red Storm in game one
CHICAGO — The St. John's softball team opened its three-game BIG EAST series against DePaul with a 10-1 run-rule victory on Thursday afternoon at Cacciatore Stadium.
The Red Storm (24-12, 5-5 BIG EAST) tallied 10 runs on 11 hits, highlighted by a seven-run fourth inning that broke the contest open. The 10-run performance marked the Johnnies' second-highest scoring performance of the season, trailing only their 11-10 comeback victory over conference rival UConn on March 8.
Jess Bianco paced the offense with three hits, two runs scored and two RBIs, while Sarah Post delivered the biggest swing of the game with a grand slam and four RBIs. Natasha Limbani finished a perfect 2-for-2 with two runs scored, while London Slade, Elanna Lysiak, Makenna Meadows, Ava Fierst and Madison Konopka each recorded hits in the victory.
St. John's struck first in the second inning. Limbani opened the frame with a double before Meadows singled to bring her home. Later in the inning, Fierst scored on a wild pitch, giving the Red Storm a 2-0 advantage.
After both teams were held scoreless in the third inning, the Johnnies erupted in the fourth. Fierst started the rally with an RBI bunt single before Bianco followed with a two-run single to extend the lead. With two runners aboard, Post launched a grand slam to left center, capping the seven-run frame and pushing the lead to 9-0.
Post's grand slam marked the first home run of her career and was the Johnnies' third four-bagger of the season.
St. John's added another run in the fifth inning when Lysiak singled to right field, bringing home Bianco to make it 10-0.
The Blue Demons (12-23, 3-10 BIG EAST) broke through in the bottom half of the inning after lifting a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring the Blue Demons' lone run.
Following the score, Serafinko limited any further damage to secure the 10-1 victory in the series opener.
St. John's and DePaul will continue their three-game series tomorrow at Cacciatore Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. and the contest will be streamed live on ESPN+, with live stats available on RedStormSports.com.
