NEW YORK – For the sixth straight week, St. John's baseball has been represented on the BIG EAST Baseball Weekly Honors, with a pair of first-time selections for Ayden Frey and Nick Romer, the conference office announced on Monday afternoon. This marks the first time in more than two decades that two St. John's student-athletes have earned weekly recognitions for four straight weeks.
Frey and Romer both delivered standout performances across a four-game slate that included a midweek matchup at Rutgers and a critical BIG EAST series victory at Xavier.
Frey started all four contests, slashing .400/.500/.611 while going 8-for-18 at the plate and recording at least one hit in each game. He scored five runs, tallied three doubles and five RBIs, and added two walks.
The infielder opened the week with a 2-for-5 performance at Rutgers, scoring twice and driving in a run. In the series opener at Xavier, he went 2-for-5 with a pair of doubles, two RBIs and a run scored in the 12-7 victory. The junior followed with a 3-for-5 effort in game two, providing the game-tying hit in the top of the ninth inning to help the Johnnies win, 8-6, in 11 innings to clinch the series. He capped the weekend by going 1-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI in the series finale.
Romer made three appearances during the week, taking the mound against Rutgers and in the final two games of the Xavier series.
The freshman right-hander logged 3.1 innings of relief, allowing just one run on three hits. In the second game of the Xavier series, Romer delivered a clutch performance in the 10th inning, tossing a 1-2-3 frame to earn his first collegiate victory and secure the series win for the Red Storm.
Frey, Romer and the Red Storm will travel to Hofstra on Tuesday for a midweek contest. First pitch from University Field is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. on FloSports.
