Hampton becomes first St. John’s skipper to be tabbed since Ed Blankmeyer in 2008
QUEENS, N.Y. – St. John's baseball head coach Mike Hampton was named American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA)/ATEC Northeast Region Coach of the Year, the organization announced on Tuesday afternoon.
Hampton becomes the second St. John's coach since 2004 to win an ABCA regional award. Former St. John's head coach and ABCA Hall of Famer Ed Blankmeyer was named the Northeast Region Coach of the Year four times during his tenure (2004, 2005, 2007, and 2008).
Hampton was one of eight Division I coaches selected for the regional coaching honor. All eight coaches guided their teams to the NCAA Tournament, while Hampton was one of five coaches to take his squad to the Super Regional round.
The St. John's skipper adds another honor to his coaching collection, as his staff was named the BIG EAST Coaching Staff of the Year for the second time in the last three years last month. Hampton also garnered the recognition seven times as a member of Blankmeyer's coaching staff from 2005-18. It was the 12th time since 1985 that a St. John's skipper has received the league's top coaching honor.
Hampton guided the Johnnies to its 39th NCAA Tournament appearance, a mark that's tied for the 12th most amongst NCAA Division I programs. The Red Storm claimed its conference leading 11th BIG EAST Tournament Championship and 10th regular season crown, marking the fourth time in program history that the Johnnies won both titles in the same season.
After securing a pair of wins over No. 10 Florida State and victory over Northern Illinois in the Tallahassee Regional, Hamptons squad punched its ticket to the Super Regional for the first time since 2012.
The Red Storm ends the season ranked 20th in the D1Baseball poll and 24th in the Baseball America poll. This marks the first time that the Johnnies have ended the season in a national poll since 2018, when they were ranked 30th in the final Collegiate Baseball Newspaper poll. This also marks the first time since 2012 that the team has appeared in multiple end-of-year polls.
St. John's finished with an overall record of 36-26 and 15-6 in BIG EAST play. The Red Storm won all seven of their league series and capped off the season with a 6-2 record in postseason competition.
