Julia Lombardo strikes first career goal in the 89th minute to give the Red Storm its first win of the season
QUEENS, N.Y. – St. John's women's soccer powered past Towson on Julia Lombardo's game-winner for the 2-1 win on Senior Day Thursday afternoon.
St. John's (1-2-0) secured a thrilling 2-1 Senior Day victory over Towson (1-1-0), finding the game-winner in the final minute of regulation. The Red Storm carried a 1-0 advantage into halftime before the Tigers pulled even in the second half. Despite being outshot, 12-4, the Johnnies remained resilient and broke the deadlock with just 39 seconds remaining to earn their first victory of the season.
Lombardo netted her first collegiate goal in dramatic fashion, scoring the game-winner to secure the Johnnies' first victory of the 2026 campaign. After recording an assist against FDU during her debut season, the sophomore added two more points to her career total with the decisive tally.
Junior defender Telma Steindórsdóttir opened the scoring with her second career goal, finishing off a well-placed feed from fellow defender and Iceland native Snæfríður Eva Eiríksdóttir. Steindórsdóttir, who scored her first career goal against Providence last season, now has four points during her time in Queens.
Eiríksdóttir has made an immediate impact in limited action this season, recording an assist in each of her two appearances. After setting up Erin Palmeri's goal at Boston College on Aug. 17, the junior notched her second helper of the year against the Tigers in just 66 minutes of action.
Graduate goalkeeper Kayla Bower earned her first victory between the pipes this season, anchoring the Red Storm defense with three saves to help secure the 2-1 win. Bower outdueled Towson goalkeeper Teagan Gardner, who finished with two stops on the afternoon.
The Red Storm and the Tigers battled evenly through the opening 35 minutes, with each side registering one shot on goal and one corner kick. St. John's capitalized on its corner opportunity when Eva Eiríksdóttir collected the ball outside the box and delivered a cross through traffic to Steindórsdóttir, who finished past the Towson goalkeeper to give the Johnnies a 1-0 advantage.
The visitors found the equalizer in the 66th minute when Sofia Rosenblatt converted off a rebound following a set piece. The Tigers continued to apply pressure down the stretch, but Bower kept the match level with her third and final save before quickly sending the ball into the attacking third. In her collegiate debut, freshman Carly Schuler fired an attempt on target that Towson goalkeeper Gardner turned away. Gardner was unable to control the ensuing clearance, allowing Lombardo to pounce on the loose ball and bury the game-winner with just 39 seconds remaining to seal the Red Storm's 2-1 Senior Day victory.
The Red Storm will return to action on Sunday for a short trip to Columbia at Rocco B. Commisso Soccer Stadium at 2 p.m.
