The Red Storm ride a 2-1 victory over Towson into Sunday’s contest
QUEENS, N.Y. – After a thrilling victory on Thursday, the St. John's women's soccer team will return to action for a local tilt at Columbia on Sunday afternoon.
Kick-off is set for 2 p.m. at Rocco B. Commisso Soccer Stadium with Lance Medow on the call from New York, N.Y. Fans can tune into the contest on ESPN+.
St. John's (1-2-0) earned its first victory of the 2026 campaign in dramatic fashion, defeating Towson, 2-1, after netting a game-winner in the final minute on Senior Day in Queens.
The Red Storm carried a 1-0 advantage into halftime before the Tigers equalized in the 66th minute, setting the stage for sophomore midfielder Julia Lombardo to deliver the decisive tally with just 39 seconds remaining in regulation.
Lombardo's late tally marked the first goal of her collegiate career and the program's latest game-winner since Jordyn Levy scored in the final second of a 1-0 triumph over Saint Joseph's on Sept. 1, 2024. Junior defender Telma Steindórsdóttir opened the scoring with her second career goal, while Snæfríður Eva Eiríksdóttir and Sia Bharadwaj were credited with assists.
Eiríksdóttir has now recorded a helper in each of her two appearances this season, while Bharadwaj collected the first point of her collegiate career.
Graduate student goalkeeper Kayla Bower anchored the Red Storm defensively with three saves to earn her first victory of the year. She owns 1.67 goals against average and 0.722 save percentage playing all 270 possible minutes in net.
Freshman Carly Schuler also made an impact in her collegiate debut, putting a shot on target in the closing moments that helped create Lombardo's decisive tally.
St. John's and Columbia will face off for the 18th time in a series that dates back to 1988. The Red Storm holds a 9-4-4 advantage all-time against the Lions. The two teams met last season in Queens, with Columbia outlasting the Johnnies in a 1-0 decision. On the road, St. John's is 4-2-2, picking up a 2-2 draw on Aug. 28, 2022, in the last contest away from home.
The Lions are coming off a 6-7-3 campaign in 2025 and finished third in the Ivy League standings. Columbia welcomes seven newcomers for the 2026 season, in addition to 20 returners, including all three 2025 All-Ivy honorees, Evelyn Javers (Second Team), Maia Beltran (Honorable Mention) and Dema Elder (Honorable Mention).
The Lions opened the season with a 1-1 draw at Hofstra on Aug. 21. Helena Andrzejewski broke through in the 50th minute off a feed from Leila Hawkins before the Pride responded with the equalizer in the 79th minute to secure the draw.
Following Sunday's contest, the Red Storm will return to action on Thursday for a road trip to UMBC for a 7 p.m. contest at Retriever Soccer Park.
