The Red Storm kicks off league play at Villanova on Sept. 26

QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's women's soccer team fell to Penn, 1-0, on Saturday night.

The Red Storm (3-4-1) generated consistent pressure throughout the contest, finishing with an 11-10 advantage in shots and an 8-3 edge in corner kicks. The Johnnies controlled much of the opening half, outshooting the Quakers, 6-4, while putting four attempts on frame and earning eight corners. Penn (5-3-1) broke the scoreless deadlock in the 56th minute and held on for the one-goal victory.

Carly Schuler paced the St. John's attack with a match-high four shots, including one on goal. Nora Basile and Julianna Bivona each added two attempts, while Lauren Spence and Bivona also put shots on frame. Seven different Johnnies registered at least one attempt in the contest.

Kayla Bower turned in another strong performance between the pipes, making five saves over nearly 79 minutes of action. Ava Voynovich entered in the 79th minute and played the final 11 minutes without allowing a goal.

St. John's controlled much of the opening half, creating several quality opportunities while generating eight corner kicks. The Red Storm put four shots on target over the first 45 minutes and appeared to break through late in the period when Leana Ruiz found the back of the net. However, the goal was called back for offside, sending the two sides into halftime scoreless.

Penn increased its pressure early in the second half and broke the deadlock in the 56th minute on a goal from Mia Fuss. The Johnnies responded with a flurry of four shots in just over three minutes, including three consecutive attempts from Schuler, highlighted by a dangerous strike that rang off the post. Juliana Dane followed with an attempt that sailed just wide as St. John's continued to search for the equalizer. Despite the late push, the Red Storm was unable to break through as Penn held on for the 1-0 victory.

The Red Storm will open up conference play on the road, heading to Villanova on Sept. 26 for a 4 p.m. kickoff.
