Coach Richard Sipala enters his third season as an assistant coach of the St. John’s men’s tennis program on Head Coach Dillon Pottish’s staff.
Sipala is part of a coaching staff that has a 32-8 overall record through its first two seasons at St. John’s. The Red Storm were 13-2 in the 2019-20 campaign before it was halted due to COVID-19.
Two seasons ago, Sipala was an integral part of the coaching staff that led St. John’s (19-6) to its first BIG EAST Championship and NCAA Tournament berth since 2016. As a result, the St. John’s coaching staff was lauded as the BIG EAST Coaching Staff of the Year.
Sipala was a member of the FAU Men's Tennis program as an assistant coach in 2017-18. In his lone season with the Owls, Sipala helped coach the men’s program to a 19-10 record and one win short of an NCAA Tournament berth.
A native of Quogue, N.Y., Sipala was a First-Team All-Conference singles player and a captain his senior year at Bryant University.
After graduation, Sipala moved to New Delhi, India to accept a coaching position at the Delhi Lawn Tennis Association. He also coached the players of India's junior Davis Cup team and traveled with them worldwide to various ITF tournaments.
