Steve Pogue was hired as the women's basketball associate head coach in May 2024.
In this role, Pogue will play a pivotal role in the program’s day-to-day operations and will be a crucial piece to the Red Storm’s recruiting efforts.
Pogue brings 13 years of coaching experience at various levels and has mentored 20 all-conference selections and seven future professional players during his career.
Pogue arrives after spending two successful years at Stony Brook. After joining the Seawolves prior to the 2022-23 season, he was promoted to the role of associate head coach after just one season. The promotion paid dividends as Pogue played an integral role in guiding the Seawolves to a 28-5 overall record and a 16-2 conference mark to earn a Coastal Athletic Association Regular Season Championship in just their second year in the league. Stony Brook advanced to the Women’s Basketball Invitation Tournament (WBIT) Second Round and held a top-10 winning percentage in NCAA Division I (84.8%).
Playing a major role in the defensive scheme, Stony Brook’s opponents have averaged just 61.7 points per game over the last two years. In 2023-24, the squad ranked 33rd in the country in scoring defense allowing just 57.8 points per contest. The Seawolves held teams to 35.0 percent shooting from the floor and 25.2 percent from 3-point range, which ranked first in the conference.
Prior to his time on Long Island, Pogue spent a three-year stint as an assistant coach at East Carolina from 2019-22. During his time in Greenville, N.C., he helped mold the Pirates into one of the most disruptive defenses in the country. In each of his three seasons at East Carolina the squad ranked top-20 nationally in steals per game, top-10 in turnovers forced and top-25 in turnover margin. In 2019-20, the Pirates’ defense wreaked havoc and ranked second in the country in steals (407), steals per game (13.6), turnovers forced (24.1). The squad ranked third in NCAA Division I in turnover margin (+8.3) during that season.
While with the Pirates. He guided two-time AAC Defensive Player of the Year and First Team selection Lashonda Monk. He also worked primarily with the post players and developed Taniyah Thompson into the league’s most improved player and an all-league honoree.
From 2017-19 he served as an assistant coach at the University of Hartford under Head Coach Kim McNeil. The Hawks improved their record in each season while he was on staff and reached the WNIT after a 23-11 record in 2018-19, the program’s highest win total in nine years.
Before rising to the Division I ranks, he coached and served as a game day operations assistant at Bridgeport. During his time with the Purple Knights the team increased their win total each year, including posting 15 victories in 2016-17. His first coaching gig was at his alma mater, Nyack College, where he spent four years as an assistant coach with the women’s basketball program.
Outside of the on-court success, Pogue has a decorated track record of student-athlete success in the classroom. Over his career, the players he has worked with have a 100 percent graduation rate and has overseen 36 all-conference academic honorees.
As a student-athlete, Pogue was a four-time letterwinner at Nyack and helped guide the Warriors to a NCAA Division II National Championship Game in 2010.
Pogue graduated from Nyack with a bachelor’s of science degree in business administration with a concentration in sports management in 2010.
Pogue currently resides in Mount Vernon, N.Y. with his wife, Shireyll and daughter, Lanie.
