St. Johns University Golf 2001 / 2002 Preview

The Red Storm Golf program has made great strides in the past four years, and this could be the year of something special. The Red Storm are coming off one of their most successful seasons ever, with three team titles, seven individual titles, and an appearance at the NCAA East Regionals.
The Red Storm are led by Andrew Svoboda (Harrison, N.Y), an All Big East and NCAA district 2 team member as well, who won two titles and gives the St. Johns team a great one-two punch. Joe Saladino ( Cold Spring, N.Y.), and John DeForest (Roundout, N.Y), are key members returning for this season.
Frank Darby, the Red Storms coach, worked hard on the recruiting front and landed two talented players in Kyle Sleasman and Tim McCarthy. Sleasman hails from Loudonville, New York and played last year for the National Junior College Champions at Scottsdale (Ariz.) Community College. McCarthy comes to St. Johns from New Jersey where he had an outstanding high school career at Bergen Catholic.
The Red Storm open their season at the Navy Invitational, September 7-8. The PSINET Classic, hosted by powerhouse Minnesota, is next up on the schedule, followed by a Distirct 2 showdown at James Madison, where the Johnnies will try and defend their title from last year. Frank Darby is host of The McLaughlin, held at Bethpage State Park, September, 27-28, another event won by the Red Storm last year. The weekend of October 5-6 is the Temple Owl Classic, held at GlenMaura National in Scranton, Pennsylvania. The last event of the fall season is the Tillinghast, hosted by Quaker Ridge G.C. and Frank Darby.
We learned a lot at the NCAA Regionals last season and we intend to make it through the Regionals this year and play in the NCAA Golf Championships at Ohio State University, says Darby.
With a determined attitude to win, and field of young talent, there is no telling just how far Darby and his Red Storm will go this season.
