Senior Sheba George, graduate-student Jose Zayas, and junior Alina Abramava earned All-East honors at the ECAC & IC4A Indoor Track & Field Championships held at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston, March 1-3. George was outstanding in placing 2nd in the shot put and 2nd in the weight throw with NCAA provisional qualifying marks of 497 and 623 <. The 623 < set an ECAC championship 20lb weight throw meet record. Zayas clocked 4:08.46 to place fourth in the mile run. Abramavas leap of 12.19m / 4000 placed 5th in the triple jump. The womens team scored 20 points to place 14 out of 85 teams while the mens 5 points placed 38th out of 101 teams. We are very proud of Sheba, Alina, and Jose in placing in the ECAC and IC4A championships, stated Head coach Jim Hurt. These championships are the highest level of collegiate competition on the East coast and to have a number of athletes score is quite pleasing. Sheba, Jose, and Alina have all worked hard to develop their physical & mental abilities to a high level of performance. We are looking forward to seeing them continue to do well on the national level in the months ahead.George now heads to the NCAA Championships this weekend at the University of Arkansas where she is ranked 10th in the nation in the 20lb weight throw and 41st in the shot put. Sheba has had a record breaking season in setting SJU, Big East, and ECAC records and we look for her to finish her indoor track & field career at St. Johns with great performances at the NCAA championships this week, observed Head coach Jim Hurt. Sheba is the 11th SJU thrower to compete in the NCAA championships in the past eight seasons. St. Johns has had 7 NCAA ALL-AMERICANS in the throwing events since 1993.SJU ALUMNI DO WELL IN NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS
