St. Johns announced the addition of the womens golf team in the winter of 2002 and will begin play in the spring of 2003. Current St. Johns head golf coach Frank Darby, entering his sixth year at the helm of the Red Storms mens program, will serve as mentor for the womens program as well.
The St. Johns womens golf team is joined on the links by five other BIG EAST schools; Boston College, Georgetown, Miami, Notre Dame, and Rutgers will all compete for a spot at the championship. Four teams will be selected by the BIG EAST Womens Golf Selection & Seeding Committee to compete in a 54-hole, stroke play championship. The committee will use criteria such as head-to-head results, stroke differential, overall won-loss record, strength of schedule, results vs. common opponents and NCAA/Golfstat rating indexes to select the four participating teams.
The womens championship will be held in conjunction with the BIG EAST mens championship. The 2003 events are scheduled for April 19-20 at Notre Dames Warren Golf Course in South Bend, Ind. The womens champion will be eligible to apply for an automatic bid to the NCAA Championship beginning with the 2005 season.
Womens golf is one of the fastest growing sports in the NCAA, Tranghese said. We are very excited about providing our quality programs the chance to compete at the highest level.
Womens golf will be the 13th womens sport, while the conference conduct 10 mens sports.
