Red Storm Compete At Penn Classic

PHILADELPHIA, PA. - The St. John's men's tennis team competed this weekend at the 2003 Penn Classic, being held at the University of Pennsylvania.
In Flight "A" singles, sophomore David Nylen (Orebro, Sweden) advanced to the second round before being knocked out by Mikhail Bekker of host Pennsylvania 6-1, 7-6(1). In his opening match, Nylen ousted Maryland's Scott Fink 3-6, 6-2, 7-5 to move on. Also competing at Flight "A" singles was sophomore Nick Stocker (Norwich, England) who lost to Maryland's Ian Bliss 6-4, 6-3 in the first round. After elimination, Stocker went into the consolation bracket, where he won two matches before he was forced to retire in the semifinals to Brandon Johnson of Radford 5-1, ret.
In Flight "B" singles, sophomore Morgan Bauer (New York, N.Y.) advanced to the second round after beating Elad Ziv of Temple 6-4, 6-2. However, in the second round he dropped his match in straight sets, 6-0, 7-6 (1) to Ed Silver of Penn. Sophomore Jonathan Skinner (Norwich, England) and junior Todd Goldberg (Pomona, N.Y.) both lost their first round matches.
In the doubles draw, the team of Bauer and Nylen advanced to the quarterfinals, after victories over a duo from Cornell, 8-4 and Penn, 8-4. In the quarterfinals, they fell in a tiebreaker to Bliss and Peters of Maryland 9-8 (3). Also competing was the pair of Stocker and Skinner who fell to Fawcett and Milchutsky of Rutgers 8-2.
