Red Storm Drops Two Matches on Opening Weekend

NOTRE DAME, IND. - The St. John's University men's tennis team lost their first two matches of the spring this weekend, falling to Illinois State and No. 49 Notre Dame, in matches played at the Eck Tennis Pavilion on the campus of the University of Notre Dame.
On Saturday, St. John's dropped a close match to Illinois State, 4-3 and followed with a 6-0 loss to No. 49 Notre Dame, in their BIG EAST Conference opener on Sunday.
In the match versus Illinois State, the two schools split the singles matches, but St. John's fell as the Redbirds No. 2 doubles duo of Chris Cozad and Alban Renard beat sophomores Morgan Bauer (New York, N.Y.) and David Nylen (Orebro, Sweden) 8-4 in the deciding doubles match. On the singles side, the Red Storm won the first three singles matches, lead by Nylen at No. 1 singles who downed Ben Pettinan, 6-4, 6-4. Classmate Aurelio Di Zazzo (Ris Organgis, France) beat Ben Cappoceitti in straight sets 7-5, 6-2 at No. 2 singles, while at No. 3 singles, newcomer Louis Demarteaux (Thornhill, Ontario) swept Djordjc Ushohovic, 6-3, 6-2.
St. John's returns to the courts on Friday, January 30, when they travel to Columbia University to compete in the weekend long Columbia Invitational.
