Elmira, NY - The St. John's University women's basketball team beat Colgate 78-59 this afternoon in the championship game of the St. Bonaventure Shootout. The win marks the Red Storm's first tournament title since St. John's beat Coppin State and Kentucky to win the St. John's Classic in December 1991.
The Red Storm improve to 2-0 on the season, marking the first time the Red Storm have won their first two games of the year since beating Iona and Fairfield to open the 1992-93 season.
Kia Wright (Copiague, NY) was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player after leading St. John's with 54 points in two games. Angela Clark (Copiague, NY) was named to the All-Tournament Team.
In a streaky game consisting of several runs from each team, it was the Red Storm who prevailed in the end, and took home the Steuben Glass one-of-a-kind trophy.
The Red Storm fell behind early as Colgate scored the first nine points of the game. Clark's lay-up with 14:50 remaining was St. John's first basket and kicked off seven-straight Red Storm points. Tara Walker (Jersey City, NJ) hit a baseline jumper to tie the game at 11, before Danielle Chambers (Brooklyn, NY) hit four-straight free throws giving the Red Storm their first lead and completing a 15-2 run.
The Raiders kept it neck-and-neck until seven St. John's points went unanswered, putting the Red Storm ahead 28-20 with 3:41 to play in the half. Clark scored on back-to-back drives for St. John's in the final minute, but Colgate's Allison Lipinski hit a lay-up to end the half with St. John's ahead 34-28.
Colgate opened the second half in the same fashion as the first, scoring seven-straight to regain the lead at 35-34. St. John's regrouped mentally after Kati Kurtosi (Miskolc, Hungary) and Wright scored baskets and drew three-straight offensive fouls on the defensive end. The two teams fought hard on both ends of the court, once again keeping the score close before seven-straight from the Red Storm put them up 47-41. St. John's push did not stop, as they took a 66-52 advantage when chambers tallied three points on a lay-up and a technical foul shot on the same play.
Wright's three-pointer with 1:47 remaining in the game put the Red Storm up 74-57 and iced the win for St. John's.
Clark finished with a game-high 23 points, adding nine rebounds, while Wright chipped in 21 points and seven assists. Chambers had 13 points and 13 rebounds off the bench.
The Red Storm will return to action on Friday, November 26 when they take on Norfolk State in the first round of the UNC-Wilmington Tournament. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 pm.
