St. John's Sweeps Doubleheader from FDU

Jamaica, N.Y. - St. John's scored six runs in the fifth inning en route to a 9-5 win in game one, and jumped out to an early lead in the nightcap in a 6-3 win, sweeping a non-league baseball doubleheader from Fairleigh Dickinson at The Ballpark on Sunday afternoon.
The doubleheader sweep pushed the team's win streak to four games, as they improve to 7-8 overall, while the Knights fall to 1-11.
In the nightcap, FDU scored a run in the first on a wild pitch from junior starter Jim Wladyka (Rutherford, N.J.), but a two-run double from junior Blake Hershelman (Georgetown, Del.) gave St. John's the lead for good.
The Red Storm would score once in the second and three more times in the third, taking a 6-2 lead. In the second, Chris Joachim (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) reached on an error, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, to third on a double from Ken Devenney (Philadelphia, Pa.) and scored on a sacrifice fly to center from freshman Brendan Monaghan (Wayne, N.J.). In the third, Jim Martin (Norwood, Mass.) reached on an error, Hershelman was hit by a pitch and Tim Blackmon (Rochester, N.Y.) walked to load the bases. Joachim singled to score a run, Hershelman scored on a wild pitch and Devenney's sac fly brought in another run as St. John's led 6-2.
Senior Geno Orsogna (Norfolk, Mass.) and sophomore Craig Hansen (Glen Cove, N.Y.) threw the final two innings. Orsogna gave up a leadoff double, but struck out the side in the sixth, and Hansen struck out two of three batters in the seventh.
Wladyka improved to 2-1 this season, throwing five innings while allowing three runs on eight hits, with four walk s and four strikeouts.
In the opener, the Knights jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the first, scoring three runs (two unearned) off of senior starter Joe Reid (Rutherford, N.J.). St. John's cut the lead to 3-2 in the second when senior left fielder Anthony DeRosa (Salem, N.H.) drove in two with a single, but FDU extended the lead again in the fourth on an RBI double from Joe Munda and a run-scoring single from Dante Soriente.
The Red Storm, however, exploded for six runs in the fifth, taking an 8-5 lead. Hershelman's two-run single gave St. John's a 6-5 lead and junior Joe Burke (Brooklyn, N.Y.) hit a two-run home run into the visiting bullpen in right to close out the scoring in the inning.
Reid improved to 2-1 with the win. He threw five innings, giving up five runs (three earned) on five hits, with four walks and seven strikeouts. Rob Delaney (Rivervale, N.J.) threw the final two innings, striking out three batters.
St. John's continues its homestand on Monday, playing Hofstra at The Ballpark. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
