Men's Tennis Falls to Manhattan, Beats Villanova

Jamaica, N.Y. - The Red Storm men's tennis team's eight match winning streak was snapped this afternoon when St. John's fell to Manhattan, 4-3. The Red Storm bounced back in the second match of the afternoon, beating Villanova 6-1 in a BIG EAST contest. The Red Storm are 11-9 overall and improve to 4-1 in the conference.
In the first match, the Red Storm fell behind early after losing the doubles point. Louis Desmarteaux and David Nylen fell at No. 1 to Zoltan Bus and Eric Cohen 8-2 and the Manhattan No. 3 team of Klim Fedosiencco and Alan Cohen beat Todd Goldberg and Morgan Bauer 8-4 for the point. St. John's No. 2 team of Aurelio Di Zazzo and Claudio Holim won their match, 8-4, over Diego and David Alvarado.
St. John's bounced back and with wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 singles matches, took a 2-1 lead. Desmarteaux (6-3, 6-1) and Nylen (6-4, 3-6, 6-3) were winners over Bus and Cohen at No. 1 and No. 2, respectively. Diego Alvarado edged out Di Zazzo at No. 3 (6-7, 6-3, 7-6) to tie the score and David Alvarado's 4-6, 7-5, 7-5 win over Bauer at No. 4 giving Manhattan a 3-2 advantage.
Another tight match at No. 5 was won by the Red Storm's Holim, who beat Nick Gravagna 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 to tie the match once again. Cohen took Nick Stocker 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 in the final spot to give the Jaspers the win, close to six hours after the match began.
In the day's second match, the Red Storm bounced back after playing for several hours and beat conference foe Villanova.
St. John's took an early lead as the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles teams won, giving the Red Storm the first point. Di Zazzo and Holim won their second doubles contest of the day, beating Aaron Kusza and Lucas Kaster 9-8 (5)at No.2 and Goldberg and Bauer beat Angel Rubio and Sean Gallagher 8-3 at No. 3.
The Red Storm won the match easily, beating their first four singles opponents and picking up their sixth point at the sixth spot.
Desmarteaux, who won his first set 6-4, bounced back after losing the second set 1-6, to take the match with a 6-3 win in the third. Nylen won easily (6-2, 6-3) over John Toppel at No. 2, before Holim sealed the match by beating Ricardo Baraldi 6-3, 6-4 at No. 3.
Bauer had a convincing 6-2, 6-2 win over Rubio at No. 4 and Boris Chiporuhka walked away with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Alex Villalubos at No. 6.
Villanova's only point came with a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 5.
St. John's will return to action on Friday at Stony Brook, before heading to the BIG EAST Tournament in Miami, Fla. on April 29.
